Contrary to what ESPN may have you believe, there are actually multiple free agents in the National Basketball Association this summer who are not named LeBron James. Take a moment to let that sink in. Once you have, continue on for some updates on what else is going on in the crazy world of NBA free agency.
For starters, Carmelo Anthony is expected to resign with the Knicks for the maximum shortly. There’s no surprise there as that news was reported a couple days back by the New York Daily News, but there has yet to be an official announcement from either Anthony or the Knicks, so stay tuned.
Notorious face-blower Lance Stephenson is still on the market too. The Pacers have made an offer, but Stephenson is still testing the market. The Lakers are in on the action, but there are plenty of other potential suitors out there.
The Chandler Parsons saga is continuing as well. The Dallas Mavericks signed him to an offer sheet with $46 million over three years, and the Rockets are still mulling over the decision to match that number and keep Parsons in Houston.
Eric Bledsoe is a restricted free agent and has a few teams looking his way, including the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks, as well as his previous squad, the Suns. Bledsoe is coming off of his best season in the league by far and away, posting 17.7 points per game along with 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds.
Dwyane Wade is, of course, still on the market and is attracting interest from the Chicago Bulls. He could also return to the Heat, but it seems now that opting out of the remaining $42 million on his contract to keep LeBron in South Beach is biting Wade in the rear end.
Another interesting piece still available is Luol Deng, who has gotten looks from the Rockets but is reportedly in talks with the Heat, who are close to signing the small forward who has spent all but half a season of his 10-year career with the Bulls.
Greg Monroe is in talks with the Pistons to re-sign or $60 million over five years. Trevor Ariza could land with the Wizards, Heat, or a slew of other teams who could turn to the forward as a back-up plan. Pau Gasol turned down a two-year offer with $10 million a season from the Lakers and is reportedly close to signing with the Bulls. Paul Pierce has spent his free agency playing in the World Series of Poker, although he was unsuccessful.
Other notable names on the market include Ray Allen, Shawn Marion, Emeka Okafor, Rodney Stuckey, Andray Blatche, Jameer Nelson, and Jordan Hill.
Don’t look away. We’ll keep you posted.
Update (1:33 p.m.) — Carmelo Anthony will officially resign with the Knicks on a five-year maximum contract. My surprised face:
Update (7:00 p.m) — According to a report from ESPN, LeBron James’ contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers is a two-year deal totaling $42.1 million. The report indicates that James plans to resign for a maximum contract with the Cavs after the 2016 season when a new television deal will largely increase the maximum contract figure.
In other free agency news, Pau Gasol tweeted that he will be going to the Bulls. The Jazz have matched a $63 million offer sheet for Gordon Hayward that he received from the Bobcats. Trevor Ariza is expected to sign with the Rockets.
