Skip Bayless Is Skip Bayless, Says Popovich Should Rest Spurs Stars For Game 6
On this morning’s edition of
Worst First Take, Skip Bayless was in unusually stupid form — and that’s saying something. One of the daily topics brought up on the show was, “Should Gregg Popovich rest his star players tonight in Game 6?”
Seriously. That was a legitimate topic that came up on the show. They had a conversation about whether or not the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs should rest Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobli so that they’d be in good shape for Game 7. Why end the series in six games when you can make it harder on yourself and end it in seven?
But nobody would be dumb enough to answer “yes” to that question, right? Not even Skip Bayless is ignorant enough of modern sports to think that Popovich would ever do something like that, right?! Skip Bayless might say some stupid things, but he wouldn’t say something that was that stupid, right!?!?
Wrong. Skip Bayless said that if Gregg Popovich “could get away with it,” he would rest the Spurs stars tonight. Skip’s reference to Popovich “getting away with it” is almost certainly a nod to the November incident in which Pop rested Duncan, Parker, Ginobli, and Danny Green in a game against the Heat. David Stern fined the team $250,000 for acting “in a manner contrary to the best interests of the NBA.”
What Skip seems to be trying to say is that Popovich would bench his stars for the game if it didn’t mean a gigantic fine for the Spurs organization as the consequence. This would be a somewhat logical point to make if it was still November and it wasn’t the last two games of the NBA season during the finals.
And since it is, you have to wonder why the question was even brought up on the show in the first place.
Worst First Take has always been about shock value and drawing a reaction from people, so perhaps this is just another case of Skip-getting-people-worked-up-to-get-good-ratings. But seriously, what producer or writer or host in their right mind pitched that idea thinking it would go over well on the show?
And just for fun, here are some Twitter reactions to the absurdity:
Aye Skip Bayless is Blowed!!!!! Lmaoooo. Said Pop should sit them to be fresh for game 7 Lmaooo. Just forget about game 6 huh lol.

Skip Bayless is blowed, indeed, Greg.
Only Skip Bayless believes a coach would bench his star players in a closeout game for a NBA championship, how you even come up with that?!
