Wizards’ Wikipedia Page Altered To Refer To Jason Collins As ‘Faggot’

It doesn’t take Kevin Mitnick to alter a Wikipedia entry: anyone with a computer and a pulse can do it. You don’t even have to be an adult, and you certainly don’t have to act like one.

So this happened on Monday: someone took the time to go into the Washington Wizards Wikipedia page and change the section on Jason Collins thusly (altered and restored versions below):

Lest we fool ourselves into thinking that the issue of Jason Collins coming out as gay has only met resistance at scattered Sunday sermons and in Chris Broussard’s cubicle at ESPN, we should think again. Being a gay athlete, especially in a team sport, is a huge deal to many Americans who do not like it one bit. The Wikipedia crasher may be some juvenile lout with a Biff Tannen IQ, but remember, this country has millions of those. Wikipedia Guy represents a large portion of America for whom “gay” and “faggot” are still the ultimate put downs. Go to just about any schoolyard pickup game or listen in on any sports bar conversation, and you’ll hear the words applied liberally.

Jason Collins coming out didn’t end the war on gay bigotry, it really just signaled the beginning. We are still raising a generation of homophobes, and things like the “It Gets Better” video campaign and Kobe Bryant saying he won’t use the word “fag” anymore are barely scratching the surface of the problem.
