The Daily Yam: This Vicious Montrezl Harrell Alley-Oop Was The Best Part Of A Roller Coaster First Half
Welcome to The Daily Yam, SportsGrid’s newest feature, bringing you the top play from the night before, anything else you might have missed, and what to look forward to today. It’s your one-stop shop when you’ve missed last night’s action, and/or have forgotten what day it is. Today, we celebrate the yam that was Montrezl Harrell grabbing the ball 12 feet out of the air and throwing it down on Michigan.
Considering this is the inaugural Daily Yam, allow me to explain the origin of the name. For that, we turn to our favorite bastion of knowledge, Urban Dictionary:
In the sport or as some may say art of basketball it is commonly known as a dunk. “Yammed” = past participle.
To get more in depth with the term, it would be used to describe an EMPHATIC DUNK!
Did you see that dude yam that thing from the free throw line?
Remember when Carmelo Anthony went straight to the rim off a drop step and yammed it in Paul Milsap’s face during the ’09-’10 season?
And so on.
*Note — SportsGrid reserves the right to substitute a number of different types of sport plays for a yam depending on the season, including a slam (home run), or perhaps a wham (brutal check). We do not promise that we will make the substitute rhyme with the word “yam,” though we will try our hardest to do so without sounding silly.
Now, on to today’s news:
Your Daily Yam
The first half of the NCAA National Championship game between Louisville and Michigan was rife with offense, particularly the unexpected kind: some dude named Spike Albrecht came off the bench for the Wolverines to score 17, and Luke Hancock hit a bunch of threes for the Cardinals to pull them within one at the break.
All that being said, nothing can compare to the ferocity of this incredible Peyton Siva to Montrezl Harrell alley-oop. It came on a fast break to cap a furious rally after Rick Pitino’s club fell behind early (via G4MarchMadness):
And check out this angle (from Big Lead Sports):
Fitting that this should be the first Daily Yam on the site, because it is the textbook definition of such.
What Else Happened Last Night?
No NBA games as the league knew better than to compete with the NCAA finale; the Mets continued to look surprisingly good by chasing Roy Halladay in just four innings; Travis Hafner returned to Cleveland with the Yankees and hit a home run; Albrecht’s Twitter blew up.
What’s On Tap For Today?
Louisville goes for two as the women’s team takes on UConn for the title; a pair of likely first round playoff previews between Miami-Milwaukee at 7 p.m. and Oklahoma City-Utah at 9 p.m.
Have a good one.
