Indiana Is Feeling Pretty Salty About Being Left Out Of The NCAA And NIT Tournaments

The Indiana Hoosiers are a legendary college basketball program, but even legends can stumble and fall on their legendary faces. Led by Tom Crean, Indiana went 17-15 this year, including 7-11 in the Big Ten. That’s definitely not good enough for the NCAA Tournament. Not even the SMU Mustangs could get in, and they were ranked by the AP before Selection Sunday. Indiana had no shot.

In fact, Indiana’s record (combined with a weak non-conference schedule) wasn’t even good enough for the NIT, the 32-team secondary tournament. Here’s Tom Crean’s (unofficial) reaction to being told “You’re not one of the best 100 teams in the country, INDIANA UNIVERSITY” (via reddit):

So what does a basketball program that doesn’t make the NCAA or the NIT tournament do? Usually they play in the College Basketball Invitational, the even-lesser-known tourney for programs that need some kind of postseason to look forward to. Here’s what Indiana had to say about that (via Indy Star):

IU made the decision Sunday afternoon that the program would not accept a bid to the College Basketball Invitational, a tertiary postseason tournament in which host teams pay for their participation.

Indiana Director of Athletics Fred Glass confirmed that decision to The Star on Sunday night.

“Finances wouldn’t be an issue if we thought it made sense,” Glass told The Star. “But we’re Indiana. We don’t play in the CBI.”

Indiana doesn’t play in the CBI, even when all Indiana can get is the CBI. Got that? IU wasn’t the only major program to decline a CBI invite (Marquette, Maryland, UNLV, Washington and Ole Miss also said thanks but no thanks), but none of them said something like “We’re Maryland — SO FUCK OFF WITH THAT CBI SHIT, OKAY?”

Crean, for his part, expressed a desire to keep playing. Just not if they had to pay for it:

Cue the “Mike Woodson to Indiana” rumors.

UPDATE: Tom Crean continues to be kind of a dick about all this on Twitter:

Nothing like completely missing the point of social media to round out a wholly unsatisfying season in Indiana.
