Karen Sypher Found Guilty Of Trying To Extort Rick Pitino

The embarrassing stories are over. Today, a jury handed down a guilty verdict to Karen Sypher, whom Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino accused of attempted extortion after the two had a (very) brief tryst in 2003. Sypher claimed Pitino raped her, but he was never charged.

The trial was most noteworthy for the graphic recounting of sexual activity, the reporting of which turned Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones into a Twitter star (we delved into the nitty-gritty here, here, and here). Suffice to say, copious amounts of oral sex and Pitino ejaculating down his leg were involved.

The verdict itself was no surprise. If there was one thing Jones’ updates from the trial showed, it was that no matter how humiliating the details would be for Pitino, they’d be even more so for Sypher. Her ex-attorney (who was involved in some of the “copious amounts of oral sex” mentioned above) testifying against her, for example, did not bode well.

Sypher just did not have a good case (Jones singled out her “inconsistent story” as the reason she lost). As for Pitino, he has to be relieved this entire thing is over, and we don’t blame him – although hopefully, he doesn’t see fit to lecture the media about ethics again anytime soon.
