Southern Mississippi Band Directs Racist Chant At Kansas State’s Angel Rodriguez

Members of the Southern Mississippi band could be heard directing a racist chant at Kansas State’s Angel Rodriguez as Rodriguez took a free throw during their first round NCAA Tournament game today in Pittsburgh.

In the following video, which was sent to us by Buzzfeed, you hear a few members of the Southern Miss band chant “Where’s your green card?” as Rodriguez comes to the line. It needs to be pointed out that at this point we think it was just a few members of the band, and wasn’t pre-planned. Just a sudden, random outburst of jingoistically-tinged insensitivity from some college kids wearing Southern Miss. shirts.

Also: Rodriguez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is an American territory, thus making him a US citizen. He doesn’t need a green card.

Video of the chant is below.

It is truly sad that racism thrives in the young. What does Southern Miss teach their students anyway?

Once, I was asked for my green card by an employee of a placement agency in, of all places, New York City. I told the young man that I had served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force and that my brother took a bullet in Chu Lai, North Viet Nam. Even now, I am convinced that he was ignorant and not a racist. When asked, by the agency, if I wanted to file a complaint, I immediately declined. And remember; even university students can be ignorant of many things.

    Orlando,

if you were a vet…I think your resume would have had your military experience on it.

    Guy was DEFINITELY being racist.

IM PRETTY SURE IF HE WAS IN THE OTHER TEAM, THAT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.

By the time these racists get to school and teachers, it is too late.  Their racist training began long before that at home with their racist parents!  Many times, these types of insults go unpunished in schools as they put it down to a “joke” which it isn’t or part of growing up, which it isn’t.

Although many may disagree, I am glad they took these idiot racists’ scholarships away.  People, no matter what age, have to learn there are consequences to their actions.  To insult a visitor in your home is downright ignorant but nobody can tell me that these racist students did not know that what they chanted wasn’t wrong.  In order for me to believe that, they would have to have been living in a vacuum.  This coming after February’s Black History Month.  No excuse.  If they cannot continue their schooling @ Southern Miss because of the loss, too bad.  Let them go to a community college in their hometowns.  There is a price to be  paid for hate.  Something tells me they will continue their racism throughout their adult lives.  Look to the parents, people, that’s where they get it from.
