The Fab Five Weren’t In Love With Christian Laettner

ESPN is currently airing its documentary on Michigan’s Fab Five. It’s an interesting story, and the college recruitniks among us (who might not have been old enough to appreciate it at the time) can marvel at just how hyped this class of players was – not to mention how much they flouted the conventions of the day.

And perhaps no program more embodied the “conventions of the day” than Duke. As such, it won’t shock you to learn the members of the Fab Five didn’t think especially highly of the Dukies…or their biggest star at the time, Christian Laettner. In fact, when the Michigan players got around to describing Laettner, a couple unflattering words in particular came up.

Granted, it was more based on a preconceived notion of Laettner than the guy himself, but in a way, it’s poetic…one highly divisive team talking smack about another. Video, via ESPN, below.

    ok where did christian lattner end up…..thats right nowhere

  • cw

    Actually he ended up in the NBA and never became much of a factor, but its more than you or 80% of the FAB 5 did, and im giving you 1/2 of Juwann Howard and 1/2 Jalen rose because neither of them were all-stars

    He played 10+ years in the NBA.

    Sounds like HATE to me. Let’s not talk what happened AFTER college. Let’s talk Duke against Michigan during the Fab years.Bottom Line:

    Duke 3 wins and no losses.
    Michigan 0 wins and 3 losses.
    Duke= 2 NC’s during those years
    Michigan= 0 NC’s during the Fab 5 years

    That sounds like bitterness coming from them if you ask me. The bottom line is, what exactly did they EVER accomplish as a team? Not a damned thing. They weren’t even original. The Georgetown team of the early and mid 80′s were the original “Inner City” teams.

    So deal with it haters. Duke simply dominated them and they can’t stand it.

    Christian had 2 National Championship rings during his college career, which is what this is all about. How many did the Fab 5 have again?
    O’h yeah…NONE.

    why are we talking about the fab five they did nothing,DUKE done it all and they still are like it or don’t like it learn to love it.

    degree from DUKE university,and not to shabby of a NBA career,a nice looking family.What more could you ask for.Did all the fab five graduate,just asking I Don’t know,they sure don’t act like it.

    Actually Laettner played 13 years in the NBA and made an all-star team. So while his NBA career did not match Chris Webber’s and I would give Howard the edge also thanks to his outstanding longevity, but Laettner’s career was superior to Jalen Rose’s.
