WATCH: NCAA’s First Transgender Player Speaks Out
This is Kye Allums, who will become the first openly transgender player in NCAA Division 1 basketball history when the season starts on November 13th.
Allums told Outsports.com he first noticed he wasn’t like the other girls in middle school. He spent some time trying to be more feminine, but when that didn’t feel right, he identified as a lesbian. But when that didn’t feel right, either, he started asking people to identify him as a male during his freshman year in college.
Allums can’t undergo surgery or take hormones if he wants to be on GW’s women’s basketball team, according to NCAA rules. But he identifies as a male, even if he’s biologically a female, as he explains in the AP interview above.
