What Happened Last Night: Buzzer Beaters And Crazy Stat Lines In The NBA, And A Massive College Basketball Upset
Had plans last night that didn’t involve sports? We feel for you, we really do – because you missed a damn good night of action. So good, in fact, that we’ll keep this intro short and get right to recapping what went down. Cool? Cool. Let’s do this.
The NBA had all kinds of good stuff happening.
Like this Monta Ellis buzzer-beater to beat the Rockets:
Smart move by the Bucks getting right off the floor, but they could have celebrated all they wanted: that shot was clearly good. And while Ellis’s overall shooting last night, as it often does, left something to be desired (9-for-24 from the field), his overall stat line – 27 points, 6 rebounds, 13 assists, 6 steals – left much less room for complaint. He wasn’t the only guy putting up strong numbers in that game, either: the Rockets’ Omer Asik played valiantly in defeat, recording 16 points and 22 rebounds.
Just look at all the wacky and/or impressive things happening in the Association last night: Mickael Pietrus. The airball dagger. Kevin Durant recording a triple-double in 27 minutes (the Thunder won by 45). A bad Suns team ending the Spurs’ 18-game home winning streak largely on the back of Jermaine O’Neal (22 points, 13 rebounds). And of course, that Knicks-Warriors game at the Garden. Tyson Chandler’s final line: 16 points, 28 rebounds. 18 of those came on defense. The Warriors missed 36 shots. He got rebounds on half the entire team’s misses for the entire game.
Oh, and also how about Steph Curry? I mean, both committing a crucial turnover and getting a shot blocked in the final minutes of the game like that, with the Warriors peskily hanging around without David Lee? What’s wrong with that guy? (As is hopefully obvious, I’m kidding. He was unreal. Great NBA night.)
There was a massive college basketball upset.
Michigan came in at No. 4 in the country. Penn State came in at 0-14 in the Big Ten. Michigan’s two top scorers combined for 37 points on 50 percent shooting, and the Wolverines shot over 50 percent as a team and outrebounded the Nittany Lions 37-27. So of course Penn State emerged with an 84-78 win that will knock the Wolverines significantly down in the polls and precipitated an entirely unexpected court storming in State College. Without question, this was one of the biggest upsets of the season. Any given night.
Also, elsewhere in college basketball, as long as we’re semi-on the topic of crazy buzzer beaters, Texas brought us this, and eventually beat Oklahoma. Told you last night was packed.
And in the NHL…
This nifty game-winner from the Kings’ Anze Kopitar against the Red Wings. Our own Matt Rudnitsky picked the Kings to win last night. Coulda made a few bucks if you’d listened to him. Just throwing that out there.
