A 69-Year-Old Football Coach Dons Shutter Shades, Lip-Syncs Into Our Hearts

It was 1990. Alabama and Miami were facing off in the Sugar Bowl. Crimson Tide receiver Prince Wimbley made a nice catch, and he celebrated with a dance. His coach, Bill Curry, did not like that dance. When Wimbley got back to the sideline, Curry got right in his face, chewing him out, and even grabbing his face mask for good measure. With that outburst, Bill Curry’s reputation as an old-school coach was cemented.

It is 2012. Curry, now 69, is coaching upstart Georgia State, and they’ve got their first-ever Saturday night game coming up this weekend against fellow upstart program Texas-San Antonio. The game is at home, and Georgia State’s going all-out to promote it, including free food, glow-in-the-dark t-shirts, and even shutter shades. And as part of that all-out promotion, Curry participated in the video below. Watch it, and keep in mind that a guy who once flipped out on one of his players for doing a dance did this:

More than two decades have gone by, yes. There’s a difference between goofing off for a video like this and doing it during a game, sure. And all due respect to Georgia State – they need a little more help promoting themselves than, say, Alabama did. But: shutter shades. 69-year-old, former Alabama coach, once-played-for-Vince-Lombardi Bill Curry is wearing shutter shades and lip syncing as part of his job as head football coach. If there’s any better indication of how much, and how quickly, times can change, we’d love to hear it. Or see it. Ideally in the form of Nick Saban donning a diamond-studded grill to get Alabama fans ready for homecoming.
