Chuck Cecil Kicks Off His Broadcast Career By Saying An O-Line Player “Got Beat Like A Stepchild”

As a player, Chuck Cecil was known for brutal hits. As an assistant coach, he was flopped so bad Mike Tomlin swore he never gave Cecil an interview. As a broadcaster… things aren’t off to the best start.

Is “beaten like a stepchild” a common rural American colloquialism? Sure. Should it ever be uttered on-air? Absolutely not.

I couldn’t believe my ears. “Beaten like a stepchild!” It would be one thing if he was torturing dogs to death or raping co-eds, but this really crosses the line. How wildly inappropriate that in a sport where young men fill up on steroids and then knock the living shit out of each other for 60 minutes a commentator would use a colloquialism that means bested easily and spoken all the time by people who’ve never had any thought of literally beating stepchildren.

I thought it was a fitting use of the phrase. Cecil can do no wrong.
