Former WVU Head Coach Stewart Dies
Grambling State Football Coach Suggests VERY Harsh Punishment For Out-Of-Line Agents
Rod Broadway is a pretty good coach. He’s compiled a 59-21 record in seven seasons leading lower-division college football teams, and his current gig is at Grambling State, a storied program.
Often, good coaches are driven by an intense fire within that the layman can’t understand. Judging by his recent comments on the best way to deal with agents overstepping their bounds and jeopardizing players’ college eligibility, Broadway seems to possess just such a fire. And, um, we’re a little terrified.
Here’s the money quote:
“Number one they should put them all in front of a firing squad and shoot their ass.”
Whoa, that’s pretty out there. What’d he do, in the face of making a comment like that?
(Laughs)
Hilarious!
OK, so he didn’t actually mean it, as the laughter shows. But that’s quite the risky comment, even as a joke, coming from a representative of an institution of higher education in charge of mentoring young men.
Like Nick Saban before him, Broadway is tired of agents misbehaving – with good reason. We might have liked, however, if Broadway gave at least a token mention to players also having responsibility to make good choices, as Saban did. SportsByBrooks also suggested the coaches evaluate their own strategies in dealing with agents, which we’ll agree with as well, though that’s not to say Broadway’s doing anything wrong.
It’s also interesting the Broadway weighed in so forcefully, considering that at a smaller program like Grambling State, his players wouldn’t have anywhere near the contact with hotshot agents that Saban’s would at Alabama. Still, we’ll give him credit for speaking his mind, even if he went way overboard in doing it. He sure got people talking about SWAC media day. It wasn’t quite Robbie Caldwell, but we’ll take it.
