Oh, By The Way: Jerry Sandusky’s Lawyer Got A Teen Girl Pregnant In 1996

Yep: according to The Daily, the lawyer for accused Penn State child rapist Jerry Sandusky impregnated a teenage girl in 1996. Which further proves the point that the Jerry Sandusky saga is one of the biggest sources of sick, twisted irony in American history.

Joe Amendola, who was present during Sandusky’s interview/ritual slaughter on NBC last night, served as the attorney for teenager Mary Iavasile’s emancipation petition on Sept. 3, 1996, “just weeks before her 17th birthday.” An emancipation petition is when a teenager tries to legally separate from his or her parents or legal guardian(s).

Roughly around the same time, however, Iavasile became pregnant with Amendola’s child, and gave birth before she turned 18, her mother, Janet Iavasile, alleged in an interview with The Daily.

The age of consent in Pennsylvania, where the relationship reportedly took place, is 16. Based on the timeline, Iavasile was either 16 or 17, and Amendola was 49.

According to court documents, the two were married in 2003, around the time their second child was born. They’re now separated.

Mary Amendola is now 32, and didn’t return requests for comment from the Daily. But recently, in an effort to distance herself from the guy who’s defending Jerry Sandusky, she changed her Facebook name to “Mary Christmas.”

During the Costas interview last night, when Amendola was asked if he’d leave his kids alone with Sandusky, he said he would. That caused Mary Amendola to post this status update on her Facebook: “”OMG did Joe just say that he would allow my kids to be alone with Jerry Sandusky?”

OMG, indeed.
