Mark Your Calendars, October 9th Is Jerry Sandusky Sentencing Day

Perhaps the Jerry Sandusky Saga will never officially end. It has been etched in stone in college football, sports, and American culture lore and will never be whited out. But for all you closure hounds out there, three more important dates still lie ahead in the future of this scandal: Jerry’s sentencing, the beginning of Jerry’s prison sentence, and Jerry’s death. While I can’t speak for the latter two, we know this much: on October 9, 2012, Jerry Sandusky will receive his prison sentence.

Sandusky was convicted on 45 counts of sexual abuse back in June, all but assuring he will rightfully serve the rest of his living days behind bars. Almost four months after the hammer came down, we will all find out how the Pennsylvania courts quantify his monstrous, egregious acts on humanity.

Clearly, this is just semantics. Penn State is well on its way towards erasing “Sandusky” from its vernacular and the beast will never, ever be heard from again. But a part of me is giddy with anticipation to see just how mind-blowing the sentence struck down on Sandusky will be. Four consecutive life sentences? 500 years? What’s the over-under for this sort of thing anyway? Just to be clear, I am in no way making light of Sandusky’s transgressions, as they were pretty much the worst thing a human being could do short of senseless murder. I don’t even think you can assign a number amount to match the crimes he committed, let alone give the victims and their families any sense of true closure.

But this man’s prison sentence will be almost assuredly be an unprecedented, unfathomable number and he will be getting what he deserves and then some. We’ll be back in a little under a month’s time to report how many eternities it seems like Sandusky will spend in prison.
