Michigan State Beats Notre Dame On Fake Field Goal In Overtime (Video) – UPDATE

The 2010 college football season is young, but we might have seen the gutsiest call of the year already happen. Trailing 31-28 to Notre Dame in overtime, Michigan State lined up for a 46-yard field goal to tie and force a second extra period…and coach Mark Dantonio had them fake it. Holder Aaron Bates threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Gantt. Michigan State won. Holy crap.

UPDATE 2: Rather stunning bit of news: Dantonio went to the hospital early in the morning – apparently having suffered a heart attack. Cardiologist Chris D’Haem performed a “cardiac catheterization,” which he said was successful, and Dantonio is thankfully expected to make a full recovery. Just when you thought this game couldn’t get any crazier.

UPDATE: SI’s Stewart Mandel is now saying that, upon re-watching the play, the stadium play clock indeed hit :00 before Michigan State’s snap. The controversy lives!…although the play itself will live longer. We tried figuring it our ourselves via the video below, but couldn’t make out the stadium clock numbers quite well enough, so we’ll take Mandel’s word for it.

The rest of the original post is below.

It’s tempting to use the phrase “grinning like an idiot” to describe what Dantonio looked like once the play worked, but the very fact that he called it and that it worked means he is anything but. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly had a similar look, though his was more of the “seriously, that did not just happen” variety.

There was almost a mini-controversy on Twitter after the game when The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre displayed a screengrab apparently showing the play clock at :00 before Michigan State snapped the ball, but then Trey Kerby of Yahoo! pointed out that this very screengrab also appeared to show the stadium play clock having a second left, so no scandal is likely forthcoming.

And even if it were, we’re with Jimmy Traina on this one:

Personally, I don’t care if Mich St snapped ball 5 min after clock expired, you have the balls to make that call & execute it, you deserve W

Sounds about right to us. Video of the play is below. This will not be the last you see/hear of this play, and frankly, whatever hype it receives is deserved.
