Star Football Recruit Mike Bellamy Probably Should Not Have Posed For These Photos

UPDATE: Word is the money belonged to Bellamy’s aunt and the pose was intended as a joke. Clemson and Bellamy’s high school coach Binky Waldrop? Not amused:

“He was just acting like a stupid teenager,” Waldrop said.

“I talked to the Clemson coaches. They just wanted to know what happened. They weren’t very happy with Mike — and rightly so — and neither was I … Once they got a hold of him, I think he realized ‘this is not the smartest thing I have ever done.’

Really, we think this is a distraction from the important point here: there is a man named Binky Waldrop.

Running back Mike Bellamy is a really good football player. He put up huge numbers as a senior, Rivals ranked him as the 25th-best player in the country for the class of 2011, and he’s headed to Clemson in the fall. Along with being such a highly-ranked recruit comes scrutiny, however, and when Bellamy poses for pictures like two that hit the internet this morning – even if he probably did nothing wrong – there will be plenty of it.

Again, we emphasize, these pictures do not constitute any evidence of any kind of violation on Bellamy’s part. We don’t actually think he committed one ourselves. But given the current dominant storyline in college football…why, man?

Joke or no, this seems like the kind of thing that, now that it’s out in public, could potentially raise some eyebrows in unwanted places. Sure, Bellamy’s only a high schooler and will undoubtedly get much more intensive schooling about what he should and shouldn’t do when he gets to Clemson, but even so…not smart.

    How did Clemson pull three 5 star players from the state of Florida in one year- take a look at what cane to Bellamy via Fedex in that photo from Dabo’s boosters. Sad thing is, they’ll still be 7-6 or 8-5 because those coaches are not good!

    In the second picture, I count 37 visible bills. Only 3 bills are visible in his right hand but there are probably more. Let’s round it up to 40 just for the heck of it.
    The updated report says “Bellamy was being picked up after school
    by his aunt, who had just cashed a check when Bellamy grasped the money to have his picture taken.”
    What’s wrong with that story?
    1. The top picture posted here is cropped. There are other full pictures that show a clock above his head on the wall that CLEARLY says 10:30. Does school end at 10:30?
    2. It seems odd that an aunt would park her car, walk into the school and into the weight room to pick someone up. It is customary for a kid to be waiting outside. But I will let that slide.
    3. The MONEY: $4000. Most people get paid bi-weekly. Take out taxes, Medicare, Insurance, retirement, etc. By that standard, Bellamy’s rich aunt pulls in around $200K per year.
    4. Even if I am overestimating the above, what person making that kind of money cashes their check and carries it around? “Well, maybe she is buying a car,” you say. Again, what person making that kind of money buys a $4000 car with cash?
