Officer Fired For Message Board Posting About Pulling Over Dabo Swinney

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney was pulled over in Pickens, SC, for speeding way back on September 3rd. Almost two weeks later, it turns out the officer involved, Michael McClatchy of the Pickens Police Department, has been posting all about it on the Internet.

In a posting on Sports247.com which has since been removed (but recounted in the Pickens County Courier), McClatchy gave his version of the incident’s events.

The officer said he believed Swinney “thought he would be excused for the violation and continue to his appointment.” He said Swinney and his brother were asked to have a seat in the vehicle, which they did not. The officer also said the Bi-Lo store manager approached him and told him a city official was on the phone and would like to speak with him, but the officer declined.

According to the officer, Swinney’s brother said that he was a retired Alabama police officer with more than 30 years of experience and asked the officer to take the fact into consideration.

McClatchy also wrote that Swinney gave him “an unfriendly glare” before leaving and entering the Bi-Lo. McClatchy was then fired six days later for what police chief Rodney Gregory called a “violation of city computer policy, violation of code of ethics and violation of general orders.”

Luckily, the whole incident was captured via the officer’s dashboard camera. Warning: the following footage is extremely boring.

What do you think? Should the officer have been fired? Was Swinney’s glare really that “unfriendly”? Have you ever shopped at a Bi-Lo? Let us know!

Dabo Swinney deserved a ticket, but you have use better judgement. You should not post it on facebook. I think it was petty to fire an officer over it. C’Mon man!!! Give the officer a break. Everyone is entitled to a mistake in judgement. Mike is a good guy too.

did the cop write a ticket for speeding? or write a ticket to be a douche? basing on my judgement from pickens cops hes being a douche…excuse me normal

He shouldn’t be fired – How is this not public record, anyway? The police release videos all of the time….Jailbird mags release photos.
Also, just because you were a police officer OR a college coach, you shouldn’t get special treatment for a ticket. You also shouldn’t get treated worse than the average person, either.

Releasing videos, sure, but blabbing about it on a fan message board? From what I understand, that’s the part that did this guy in.

  • Pickens Pride No More

Exactly! It’s public record and videos are released all the time. It’s not WHAT he did, but who was involved. Swinney, his brother, and all of the idiots asking for autographs, Bi-lo manager Tallman, should not only be ashamed, but should also be fined for interfering with police business. What morons! It is clearly obvious from the video that the officer’s perception that Swinney thought he was above the law and deserved to get out of the ticket. Pickens has yet again been shamed, Tallman, you just lost a loyal customer, and Swinney, you just gave new meaning to the reason why so many people HATE Clemson- because it’s team members and fans are all too often pompass jackasses!
