Crazy School In Oklahoma Makes Five-Year-Old Go Behind A Tree And Turn His Michigan Shirt Inside-Out

So to clarify something right off the bat: A school district in Oklahoma only permits its students to wear Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State University, or any other Oklahoma school’s apparel if they want to wear some sort of school swag. The rule made national news last week when a five-year-old boy was forced to turn a Michigan shirt he was wearing inside-out. (I’m sure intern Matt, a Wolverine himself, would be quite angry.)

Oklahoma News 9 had the story:

Last week, The principal at Wilson Elementary asked 5-year-old Cooper Barton to turn his University of Michigan t-shirt inside-out.

The boy’s mother says her son was told he was only allowed to wear an O.U. or O.S.U. shirt to Kindergarten class.

In fact, the dress code for Oklahoma City Public Schools states that only Oklahoma college apparel is allowed. Clothes from all other schools are against current policy.

According to Oklahoma News 9, the rule was instituted in 2005 with the help of an Anti-Gang Task Force.

That means that students can’t wear any Oklahoma City Thunder apparel to school, in accordance with the rule.

But this part of the story really confused me:

Barton says her son had to turn his shirt inside out on the playground behind a tree.

Really? Behind a tree? Kid is five-years-old and you can’t, I don’t know, take him to the bathroom, or the nurse’s office, or some room indoors where he could change his shirt?

Needless to say, the school district rule is a bit outdated. The Thunder didn’t move to OKC until 2008, after all. Hopefully, the students of Oklahoma will soon be permitted to Thunder Up during school hours.

P.S. Is it just me, or is it kind of creepy when the Oklahoma newscaster is just holding up the little kid’s shirt?

That is completely ridiculous and right at the line of fascism. God help the poor soul who should ever try to impose such a ridiculous sanction on my child. If the kids a Michigan fan that’s his choice. He should be allowed the right to express this appropriately.
