The NCAA Has Made It Very Easy For Players And Signees To Leave The Mess That Is Penn State

Today’s NCAA-commissioned deathblow to Penn State football hurts the program’s past (all of their wins going back to 1998 are now off the books) and its present (a $60 million fine). The future wasn’t spared either.

In addition to taking away 20 scholarships in total, and banning the team from postseason play for four years, the NCAA has loosened transfer rules for every player on the Nittany Lions.

- If any player leaves the team and transfers to another school, they’ll immediately be eligible to play at that new school.

- In addition, any 2012 recruit that’s signed a letter of intent to play at Penn State can be released from those letters, no questions asked.

- Permission to contact rules have been suspended.

- All signees and current players can take as many official or unofficial visits as they want in this upcoming academic year.

Essentially, the NCAA has made it incredibly easy to leave Penn State, which is an attractive proposition right now considering the fact that a bowl game is out the window and those lost scholarships make your team less talented for the foreseeable future. Plus: the off-the-charts level of negativity and distraction currently surrounding your program.

As our own Glenn Davis pointed out, it’s not an official death sentence. But it might as well be.
