Today In America: Football Players Save Baby Trapped In Car

Locking yourself out of your car on a hot day is a bad feeling. Locking yourself out of your car on a hot day when your infant grandson is inside: worse feeling.

The boy’s grandmother, Teresa Gall, had put her keys down in her car and absent-mindedly closed the door. That’s when she realized she was locked out, with 14-month-old Liam Snook inside the hot car on an August day.

The temperature quickly took its toll, and after two minutes Liam began getting red and “vomiting profusely.” One of Teresa’s sisters grabbed a hammer, and the two of them tried to knock one of the front windows out. But they weren’t strong enough to break the glass, and Liam started to fall asleep.

Luckily, a pair of co-captain defensive backs from the Missouri Western State Griffons were driving by from practice (because this is America, and that sort of thing happens here). Initially, Jack Long and Shane Simpson kept driving, until they realized that the pair of frantic women banging on a car window with a hammer probably deserved a closer look. Upon realizing what was going on, all it took was one tap: the window was broken, Liam was free, and all was good in Saint Joseph, MO.

Here’s video of the happy grandparents (and Liam) visiting Long and Simpson at practice.
