49ers Release Kyle Williams, And Fans Register Their (NSFW) Pleasure At The News

I’m a 49ers fan, and I’ve always admired Kyle Williams for the way he handled criticism from fans and the media after his tough day in the 2011-12 NFL Championship Game. His miscues are etched in the retinas of most San Francisco followers: Williams fumbled twice in a 20-17 overtime loss to the New York Giants, including the fumble you see above, on a punt return in overtime that set up Lawrence Tynes’ winning field goal.

He received a torrent of abuse in the following weeks, and even got death threats. But he handled it with class, promising to come back stronger and make things right. Unfortunately, he missed most of last season with a knee injury, and this season was pretty much a bust at wide receiver and kick returner. His three fumbles against Jacksonville in London helped seal his doom.

So with the return of Mario Manningham last week, and Michael Crabtree very soon, the team made its move and released him today. Some 49ers fans took this as an opportunity to take some parting shots, seen below. Warning: many are NSFW, as Niners fans evidently needed to blow off steam after a 10-9 loss to the Panthers on Sunday. This is not their finest hour … actually it’s kind of sickening.

Come on people, this isn’t Philadelphia.

Williams should have taken this as a sign. That’s him with a friend in the preseason:

And what’s this all about, from Saturday?
