$50 Million Guaranteed For Sam Bradford – Change Rookie Contracts Already

We talked a while ago here about the insane contract Sam Bradford was about to sign with the Rams. Well, now it’s officially signed, and it’s just as crazy as initially reported.

Initial reports pegged the guaranteed money for the deal at $45 million-$50 million, and the final number ($50 million) was on the high end of that spectrum. Even if Bradford turns out to be a great player, this is insane. Why? $50 million is the most guaranteed money in NFL history.

So the problem isn’t even that rookies are making more than many established veterans – it’s that they’re making more than everybody. A rookie, no matter how talented, should not be getting the richest guaranteed deal ever in the NFL – and thankfully, after the league’s collective bargaining agreement expires after this season, probably won’t anymore. How painful the changes are to implement remains to be seen.

But the changes must be made. Sam: we like you, we look forward to watching you, the problem’s not about you. But you should not be this rich already. We hope you understand. Enjoy your outrageous wealth.
