Bill Belichick Told His Defense To Let The Giants Throw To Manningham, Mic’d Up Super Bowl Clip Reveals
It’s not often we get a chance to second guess the genius that is Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. But, after video surfaced in which he was caught urging his defense to let the Giants throw at Mario Manningham, just prior to the fourth quarter drive that brought us “The Catch,” you have to think that this strategy is one Coach Belichick would like to take a mulligan on.
In all fairness, it’s not as if the Patriots just gave Manningham wide-open looks. He was pretty tightly covered when he hauled in the 37-yard catch on the sidelines, which is what made it so memorable. But, it’s in our nature to want to play Monday Morning Quarterback as often as humanly possible.
Watch as Belichick makes one crucial “mistake”:
In all fairness to Belichick, he did make the right call in telling his team to force Eli Manning to target Bear Pascoe. It’s just that, you know, Pascoe had 22 total career receptions in his first three seasons in the league, while Manningham has averaged over 50 catches in each of the last three seasons.
