Bob Costas Waxes Poetic On Giants’ Collapse (Video)

The Philadelphia Eagles‘ comeback from 21 points down in the fourth quarter yesterday was something unlike most of us had ever seen, and NBC’s Bob Costas had to be salivating at that game’s stunning turn of events. Costas does a weekly monologue during NBC’s Sunday Night Football coverage on some of the day’s big events, and he’s perhaps never had juicier material to work with than what yesterday’s Giants-Eagles game afforded him.

From the beginning, Costas was in rare form:

“For the Giants, the usual adjectives – brutal, frustrating, devastating – are somehow insufficient in this case. To lose this way is beyond unthinkable. It borders on the impossible.”

In Costas’ defense, if there were ever a regular season football game that merited such grandiose statements, this was probably the one. In his non-defense…well, yeah, it’s overwrought. And Costas is clearly loving every second of it. He later gets into the whole “Philly is dominating New York this week!!!!!!!!” subplot, what with Cliff Lee spurning the Yankees, and now this. He also drops this line:

“What’s next? Mr. Met forced to serve as the Phillie Phanatic’s errand boy?”

(He did not, for the record, immediately pause and quietly chuckle to himself to admire the joke’s brilliance, but there’s no question he was pleased with it.) Oh, and he refers to the Phillies as the “frighteningly formidable Phils.”

Again, we cannot emphasize enough how absolutely delighted Costas is during this entire segment, which you can view above. If you root for Philadelphia teams, you might be too. If you don’t, maybe, like our own Dan Fogarty, you’ll just wish Costas delivered his monologue while wearing this.
