Giants’ Brandon Jacobs Throws Helmet Into Stands, Awaits Repercussions
Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was mad about his performance last night (four carries, eight yards), as well as at his team’s futility (38-14 loss to the Colts). He was so mad, in fact, that he threw his helmet as his team’s bench in a fit of rage. The problem: the helmet flew into the stands by accident instead. Jacobs called the incident “a mistake.” No kidding.
The consensus so far is that Jacobs is a lucky guy – lucky that no one got hurt as a result of the throw. Pro Football Talk’s Gregg Rosenthal went on to add that Jacobs is also lucky that no video has yet surfaced of Jacobs throwing the helmet, lest it look like less of an accident than it was made out to be.
Rosenthal also noted that NBC’s Andrea Kremer reported that Jacobs was yelling at fans in the stands after the throw – another thing he’s “lucky” we haven’t seen. However, it’s easy to imagine fans – having had a potentially dangerous projectile hurled at them, accident or no – might have been yelling at Jacobs, causing him to yell back. Truthfully, it would be more damning if Jacobs had been yelling at fans before he threw the helmet.
The only part of the bizarre incident NBC cameras caught was the fans who wound up with Jacobs’ helmet arguing with a Colts/NFL employee who wanted the helmet back. The fans didn’t want to give it back. Words were exchanged. Eventually, they gave it back when, as announcer Cris Collinsworth said, “somebody went up there with a big bicep and ripped it out of that guy’s hand.”
Video of the moments NBC did capture below. Supposedly, Giants coach Tom Coughlin let Jacobs hear it for his actions, but Coughlin himself said he had “no idea what happened.”
Either way, you can bet Jacobs has not heard the last of this from his team or the league – some form of punishment seems inevitable. And you can also bet that if some eyewitness believes Jacobs threw the helmet intentionally, somehow, some way, we’ll be hearing from them.
