Brandon Spikes Made An Ill-Advised Joke About Homophobia, Because The Only Kinds Of Homophobia Jokes Are Ill-Advised Ones

Most comments concerning homophobia usually end is controversy, and a recent Brandon Spikes tweet was no different. The Patriots linebacker took to Twitter on Wednesday to offer up a simple analogy/joke concerning homophobia, and the subsequent reaction was less than positive.

But you can’t deter Brandon Spikes, because he is DRIVEN.

I’m homophobic just like I’m arachnophobic.I have nothing against homosexuals or spiders but I’d still scream if I found one in my bathtub !

Spikes didn’t think what he tweeted was all that bad, so he followed it up with this:

But then, sensing the shitstorm headed his way, he said it was all a joke:

PEOPLE !!!! It’s a joke … seriously a JOKE !!! Chill out

According to the Boston Globe, Spikes was paraphrasing another joke:

“Spikes seemed to be paraphrasing a monologue by British comedian Jack Whitehall, who said 18 months ago, “I’m not homophobic. Well, I suppose I’m homophobic in the same sense I’m arachnopobic. I’m not scared of spiders. I’m not scared of gays, but I would scream if I saw one in my bath.’”

The jokes are identical, though it seems unlikely Brandon Spikes would randomly paraphrase tiny joke made by a British comedian a year and a half ago. Then again, who knows. Hopefully Roger Goodell suspends his Twitter account for 14 weeks and imposes an excessive fine in the name of player safety.
