Breaking: Tony Romo Has Given Up Golf To Concentrate On Football
Tony Romo is pretty good at golf. He used to be a fixture at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in Lake Tahoe: having attended every one since 2007, finishing in second place three straight years (2009-10-11) (Ha — second). But he was a no-show in 2013, and I got a look at the players list for this year’s tourney and he’s again absent. That’s because, apparently, Romo has given up his off-season golf habit.
In fact, it’s been almost two years since Romo has picked up a club. The Cowboys QB had two separate surgeries last year. Dallas Morning News:
Now, no one can charge that Romo spends too much time on the links. Golf is not on the list of activities as he prepares to report to camp July 22.
“Sometimes you put yourself in a tough position when coming off a surgery,” Romo said. “That’s why we have a pitch count with me throwing and why we do it that way.”
Romo had a cyst removed from his upper back in April of last year and underwent a microdisecthomy to repair a herniated lumbar disk in late December. He was limited during offseason workouts but expects to be cleared to take part in all aspects of team drills during training camp.
“You’ve got to get yourself healthy then figure out where you’re at and go from there for everything,’’ Romo said. “It’s not just golf. It’s a way you live life.
“I don’t think about it as [giving up] golf. It’s just life. You want to give yourself the best chance to succeed on the football field.’’
Romo says that his golf has never interfered with football — he never misses workouts or camps because of it, and limits his play to two or three months in the offseason per year. But how much of this is because of the surgery, and how much is because of the image it portrays? When you have memes like the ones below circulating, maybe it;s time to give up leisure sports activities:

It’s like a President on the links during World War III.
On the other hand, the Packers didn’t do much in the playoffs this past season and Aaron Rodgers will be in the Tahoe tournament. As will Alex Smith. (BTW, so will Jason Kidd, who is listed as “Brooklyn Nets Head Coach”).
So the question of the day is: when it comes to NFL players, does competitive off-season golf help or hurt? One could make the case that it keeps them in shape, I suppose. But I’ll bet Cowboys fans would prefer that he spend the time throwing footballs through tires … or Dez Bryant.
