He’s (Possibly) Baaaaaaack! Vikings Hope Surgery Signals Favre’s Return

Just in case you haven’t had your fill of “is he retired or not?” Brett Favre storylines, the Minnesota Vikings themselves added some fuel to the speculative fire by hinting that they think Favre’s recent surgery indicates he’s likely to return to the team this season.

The linked report does not quote anyone directly for an opinion on whether Favre will return, instead offering the much more vague:

[Favre] hasn’t officially told the team he’ll be back, but the vibe around the Vikings is strongly suggesting he will return.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell offered a bit more on Favre, but only said he wasn’t surprised by the surgery (which may indicate he thinks Favre wanted to ready himself for the season) and that the last conversation he had with Favre wasn’t about football.

For those keeping track, 2010 would mark Favre’s fourth consecutive “possibly final” season. Originally, 2007 was thought to be his last year – it wound up only being his last season with the Green Bay Packers. Then, he returned for another final season, this time with the New York Jets. Most assumed that would finally be it…until he never officially announced his retirement…then decided to come back with the Packers’ arch-rival, the Vikings.

This time, his return would surprise no one, especially since he proved last year he can still be an elite quarterback. It’s fair to ask whether it’s possible he can come even close to replicating his numbers from last year (33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions), considering he’ll turn 41 in October. At the very least, though, the talent is there, and for as long as Favre hasn’t made an official decision, every football fan will have something to talk (or just complain) about.
