As if !!!! She obviously knows the lyrics, this wasn’t her first time performing it. No one is perfect, we ALL make mistakes, we repeat stories we are telling our friends, sing the wrong words to songs playing on the radio (even our favorite ones!), say “Uh” during speeches or when speaking to groups. We all know that the more important the event is or how much larger the crowd in front of us grows to watch our mouths as we speak, we may become overwhelmed or possibly black out at any given moment..anything can happen. She performed this event LIVE and I respect her more for passing on the ‘fake’ pre-recording, than for the mixed up lyrics. She was able to bounce back, kept the song moving and gave a strong ending. However, I do wonder why she didn’t ‘fix’ herself up a lil better?? Her hair looked kinda nappy :( half way through the song. She is a beautiful person and I have seen her look 10X’s better than that. Puzzling.

“Tons” of people screw it up? Like WHO? When has it ever happened at the Super Bowl? When was the last time someone did it in a big game? She was more focused on adding her weird touches to it than knowing the words. There are people who sing it all the time and never screw it up (like the guy in Chicago who sang for both playoff games). She shouldn’t have done the gig if she couldn’t remember eight lines. You don’t have to get so defensive. I never said it was OK. I just think she was really nervous and that’s why she forgot the words. Okay good for the guy in Chicago! Eli Young, Keri Hilson, Jesse McCartney are few who have as well as non celebs. Just look up national anthem mess ups on youtube Im sure you’ll get a lot of results. If she had been giving it an honest effort, had cared how she looked and how she sang, and tried to sing it the way anyone would, I’d have a lot more sympathy. She was trying to do her hip, non-traditional National Anthem. And you don’t know she was nervous. She didn’t look nervous at the end or look like she had any problem with screwing it up. I’ve done years of public speaking and presenting. They key is, as always, preparation. If you are prepared, you aren’t nervous. That’s the fact.

A handful of you bashing Aguilera at your computers may be able to recite the lyrics beginning to end in the comfort of your home, but how wonderful would your singing of the anthem be in front of thousands?

We are such a low brow dumbed down everything culture in this country today that the average person doesn’t even know what truly great singing and artistry is today. I’m so sick “pop” renditions of The National Anthem! Even though Whitney jazzed it up and the harmonzation was contemporized, she sang beautiful (and I’m not a W.H. fan). Sad they can’t engage more legit singers (like Whitney) or a great legit Broadway or opera singer to sing our great National Anthem. Anyone who knows music is aware that it is a rangey and difficult piece to sing to begin with (there has been talk through history to replace it with something more singable for the average Joe or Jane), hence at a huge media event like the super bowl it should be sung and interpreted by a legit singer who has the pipes and chops to do the piece justice and not make a trashy mess of it like C. A. did today. Would that it could have been Renee Fleming, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Catherine Zeta Jones, or any other legit voiced classical or Broadway singer. If she (and her agent) agreed for her to sing the National Anthem, she should have known it cold and without all crap she added to it. For heaven’s sake, it is our NATIONAL ANTHEM! I am a service member and believe our troops need a better representation for our national anthem than that. We always perform rehearsals and dry runs before a combat mission and she should have done more to be ready for the 2 minute event.

The National Anthem was never meant to be sung as a solo—-it belongs to all of us and we should all SING it together. Some day, the people who design these big events will stop to think about what it means for all of us to stand together and sing the one song that unites us.
