VIDEO: Christina Aguilera Sings National Anthem At Super Bowl XLV

Christina Aguilera sang the national anthem at tonight’s Super Bowl, and, for all of those who held  held the note “brave” at the end of the stars and stripes for just over 6 seconds (based on our calculations).

Aguilera, of course, was the source for two of the more creative bets being placed on tonight’s game: how long she would hold the “brave” note at the end (the over/under was 6 seconds), and how long her performance would be (the over/under was 1 minute 54 seconds). The performance itself was clocked at 1 minute 54 seconds by some, while others had it at exactly 1 minute 56 seconds.

One Green Bay player was seen crying on the sidelines during the performance. But not everyone was so touched.

ESPN’s Amy Nelson tweeted, “Did xtina just mess up the lyrics? Or was I imagining it?”

Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated asked, “Blowing the words of the anthem at the Super Bowl. Wow. Do they take away one of her five Grammys for that? Two?”

CNBC’s Darren Rovell was concerned with the betting implications, noting “Christina Aguilera just killed the National Anthem bet by singing the wrong words. Easily would have gone over 2 minutes.”

Watch video of Aguilera’s performance here.

  • Sasha

Maybe the player was crying because her performance was such a mess. She should have spent a little less time trying to hit the over/under and a bit more trying to get the words memorized.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=529490180 Scott Lowthorp

Maybe he was crying because she messed up the lyrics…how sad and pathetic is that?!?!

  • Diane

how do you mess up the national anthem ?… seriously???

  • Jolene3352

What lazy person wrote this and said “judge for yourself whether she messed up the song”? Fact: she skipped the “o’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming” line and replaced it with a repeat of the “twilight’s last gleaming” line. Do your research, lazy sports grid writer. Or get a clue about the national anthem. Hint: they sing it at EVERY SPORTING EVENT IN AMERICA.

  • CheChe

“What we so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last reaming???” “O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming”

rotflmao. Where’s Marvin Gaye when you need him? Oh, I forgot, Dead.

  • Lisa D.

UN REAL! They are so worried about sensoring for a nip slip, they should have asked her if she knew the words. She should hold a press conference and appologize. Bet she doesn’t. A disgrace.

  • Kmasd Xma

I feel bad for all the troops watching.

  • Elizabeth

Notice the football player on the right at about 1:19ish. He says, “She messed up.” HILARIOUS!! lol

  • Caseysmom7208

how do you mess up one of the most important songs for your country? how do you mess up one of the most inportant songs for your contry on one of the most inportant days for football? DUMB A**

  • gia

she sounded good and was singing live. i dont even know the words

  • Gorgeous

Plum RIDICULOUS!!!!! Get someone that can at least get the lyrics right. She ought to be ashamed that she don’t even know the words to our National Anthem. Yeah, she’s a real winner,,,,NOT!!!!!

  • Prissy&)Conceited

Okay , Christina Aguilera messed up the National Anthem , but don’t act like you all haven’t forgot or mixed up some of the words !

  • ???

seriously guys ???? I’d like to see you get up and sing it perfectly in fornt of the entire world ! Good luck with that ! Give the girl a break !

  • Marlenk

Very Very Sad…she didn’t know the words and she tried too hard to make it her own..Well I guess she did since she changed the words. She butchered the National Anthem.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1002307909 Mary Ann Arnold

    Really!!!!!!

  • Gorgeous

No she didn’t sound good, and that’s the more reason to know the words to the National Anthem because she was singing it live. If she don’t know it, and can’t sing it right, don’t get out there and do our country an injustice by slaughtering the song. It’s time you learn the words if you don’t know them.

  • Dan

    Judge for yourself?

Are we that dumb that it is not obvious?

    Very sad guys!

  • Jgiven22

What does this article mean “judge for yourself”? She repeated “What so proudly” instead of saying “O’er the ramparts” and mumbled the end of the 4th line because she was confused. Too much partying last night, no doubt. What is there to judge? WHY she messed it up? She messed it up. Just say so.

  • AtruDiva

Un-freakin’ believable!!! i suppose she was too good to rehearse the song which resulted in her inventing new lyrics.

  • mlezmom

It is a difficult song to sing, and I am sure nerves were involved. But she’s a professional and has sung it many times. I have to go with inexcusable this time. There is a time and place for artistic interpretation; the National Anthem is not one of them.

  • Jgiven22

She did NOT sound good – she sang it incorrectly. And she didn’t know the words. I mean, typical of this country. You can butcher the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and people say “Oh, poor her. Don’t judge her.” There ARE in fact STANDARDS, lady.

  • Nadia

Even if she got the lyrics right, she destroyed the song with her ridiculous vocal “embellishments”. A total disgrace.

  • Anonymous

Absolutely. If you are going to switch up keys and do crazy things, you had BETTER get the lyrics right. Awful.

  • RUKiddingMe

She’s a professional speaker and got paid to sing there . . . she should at least have learned the words. It’s disgraceful!

  • guest

I understand the perspective that it is difficult to stand in front of that many people and remember all the words, but it wasn’t her first time, and she really should have sang it correctly for respect of our country. She could have turned down the request. There are plenty of singers who would do it justice.

  • Anonymous

You could tell the Green Bay coach, McCarthy, knew she had screwed up. Yet apparently the dope writing this article didn’t know.

  • RUKiddingMe

    *singer, not speaker . . . LOL . . .

  • RUKiddingMe

    *singer, not speaker . . . LOL . . .

  • Anonymous

Does ANYONE have to do anything right? Or are you one of those people that think both teams should be “winners” tonight. Aguilera decided she’d do all kinds of crazy vocal embellishments instead of learning the words. You’re crazy.

  • mp

she was so busy trying to jazz it up. why not just sing it the traditional way and then maybe she wouldn’t have forgotten the words!!!! Nice real Nice – no longer one of her fans. At least people will never forget her, but who would want to be remembered for the one that screwed up our National Anthem????

  • mp

What??? Get real – she is a professional. And NO I HAVE NEVER MIXED UP OR FORGOTTEN ANY OF THE WORDS. It is our National Anthem for heaven’s sake.

  • WHAT?

What a shame. She made a fool of the troops, this country, that tradition and herself. Too bad, she is phenomenal singer, she could have really set a ‘best ever’ national anthem, but that still belongs to Whitney Houston . . . no matter how messed up Whitney has become, she will have that . . . sorry Christina, bad movie, bad marriage, bad performance, you are sinking fast . . .

  • Mary

That was a horrific version of the National Anthem which should be sung with reverence and respect. Disgrace that she did not know the words and her embellishments were OTT. Sorry Christina not good at all.

  • NunyaBeezwax

As if !!!! She obviously knows the lyrics, this wasn’t her first time performing it. No one is perfect, we ALL make mistakes, we repeat stories we are telling our friends, sing the wrong words to songs playing on the radio (even our favorite ones!), say “Uh” during speeches or when speaking to groups. We all know that the more important the event is or how much larger the crowd in front of us grows to watch our mouths as we speak, we may become overwhelmed or possibly black out at any given moment..anything can happen. She performed this event LIVE and I respect her more for passing on the ‘fake’ pre-recording, than for the mixed up lyrics. She was able to bounce back, kept the song moving and gave a strong ending. However, I do wonder why she didn’t ‘fix’ herself up a lil better?? Her hair looked kinda nappy :( half way through the song. She is a beautiful person and I have seen her look 10X’s better than that. Puzzling.

  • mp

Hello – she has never sung in front of a crowd? If she wasn’t so busy trying to jazz it up, maybe she wouldn’t have screwed it up. Somethings are better left the way it is meant to be. She should be ashamed of herself and look for another career.

  • Anonymous

Probably out partying too hard last night. I have no evidence to support that – but she looked like hell and screwed up the National Anthem. No sympathy.

  • me

I can’t even believe you would post something so ignorant. Thanks for being and showing that you are a true American

  • Anna

She probably rehearsed a lot. But once you get up there in front of a lot of people, you get nervous. Sometimes the nerves get the best of you and you forget what you are saying. This happens to EVERY singer or actor even sometimes. But give her a break. Seriously.

  • Anonymous

Gia, another sign that our country is going down the tubes fast. Since gia is ignorant, all others can be ignorant and that’s OK because Gia feels OK about herself at the end of the day.

  • JM

WOW she really sucked, messed up the lyrics and it didn’t even sound good……….why can’t they just get a good singer who is not so worried about her image………….one who actually cares enough about the country we live in to attempt to get it right

  • Anonymous

She rehearsed a lot? Based on what? And yeah, she’s NEVER been in front of a crowd before.

There are eight lines. If she had rehearsed “a lot” she wouldn’t have forgotten.

You have no evidence to support your point of view. My evidence to support my view is that she screwed it up.

  • Disgusted

Just awful, forgetting the words – awful and who cares how long she can hold a note when they were all bad!

  • guest

Are you for real? She’s a professional and singing is her profession. She screwed it up all the way. I can see being a little out of tune, but to forget the words to a song that is so important? She stunk and that is what everyone will remember her for……I’m not showing her any sympathy.

  • Anna

I said probably! Im a singer myself and sometimes, even when I work really hard at getting a song right, on stage I mess up. It happens. Tons of people screw up the anthem at games. Its nerves most of the time. That’s all Im saying.

I like Christina Aguilera, I really do. She has a tremendous voice. I wish she hadn’t done the National Anthem. I like the song sung, not only with the correct lyrics, but without all the show-offy embellishments, as another poster called them. Too bad. She could have made it a great experience for all of us. Instead, it went right into he ditch.

Plain and simple: she sounded awful. It was hard to listen to her abuse OUR National Anthem. Did she get pointers from Rosanne Barr? As for nerves and such, she is a highly paid professional singer who should be able to do what many high school girls have done and sing the song properly! Maybe next year, the superbowl crew could go to the local high school and get someone who can and wants to sing the Anthem the correct and respectful way.

“Tons” of people screw it up? Like WHO? When has it ever happened at the Super Bowl? When was the last time someone did it in a big game? She was more focused on adding her weird touches to it than knowing the words. There are people who sing it all the time and never screw it up (like the guy in Chicago who sang for both playoff games). She shouldn’t have done the gig if she couldn’t remember eight lines. Just because you also screw things up doesn’t make it OK that she screwed up the National Anthem. Maybe it makes you feel better about your screw-ups. That doesn’t mean our troops should have to watch that disgrace.

  • Anonymous

She butchered the song, Anna. Put in different keys and weird notes and forgot words. That was NOT a well-rehearsed song. If you are a singer you should know that.

  • Tess

Christina sang SSB many times before and she is terrible at singing it – she messes up the melody everytime by doing those vocal acrobatics w/c is really unnecessary. She should be banned from singing it — now she messed up the lyrics too!

  • Stevecropper67

I would have rather had a wardrobe malfuntion than butchering thr anthem

Still waiting for your list of the “tons” of people who screw up our National Anthem at big games.

You don’t have to get so defensive. I never said it was OK. I just think she was really nervous and that’s why she forgot the words. Okay good for the guy in Chicago! Eli Young, Keri Hilson, Jesse McCartney are few who have as well as non celebs. Just look up national anthem mess ups on youtube Im sure you’ll get a lot of results. I never said specifically at the super bowl. I understand where you are coming from though (How she shouldn’t have messed it up and how it was a disgrace because she should have been prepared.) But the fact is, it’s really nerve racking to perform at some place like the super bowl. Theres a lot riding on you. Nerves could easily mess anyone up. Just depends on how well you can control them. I wouldn’t expect anyone who’s not a singer to understand because you have never been in that kind of experience.

  • Anna

Anyways, Im done talking about this. I’ve said my piece. We are all entitled to opinions. Sorry if I offended you. GO STEELERS WOO!

  • Anonymous

If she had been giving it an honest effort, had cared how she looked and how she sang, and tried to sing it the way anyone would, I’d have a lot more sympathy. She was trying to do her hip, non-traditional National Anthem. And you don’t know she was nervous. She didn’t look nervous at the end or look like she had any problem with screwing it up. She simply looked like she wasn’t prepared and didn’t give a damn. You’re making excuses for her that aren’t supported by anything other than what happens to you when you sing. I’ve done years of public speaking and presenting. They key is, as always, preparation. If you are prepared, you aren’t nervous. That’s the fact.

  • Somogy

I’m not much for ornamenting the pitches to the national anthem the way she did, but performing is STRESSFUL. A handful of you bashing Aguilera at your computers may be able to recite the lyrics beginning to end in the comfort of your home, but how wonderful would your singing of the anthem be in front of thousands?

It was a poor performance. There have been worse, and there will be more to come. Humans make mistakes (sometimes publicly).

  • Anonymous

And I’ve never heard of Eli Young, Keri Hilson, or Jesse McCartney (maybe celebs to you, certainly would file under “non-celebs” myself). But glad you had to Google your support of your claim that tons of people have screwed it up.

  • Somogy

Because she screwed up once, publicly, there is no way she’d rehearsed it to adequate preparation (although, I do agree the ornamentation was unnecessary)?

I’d like to meet one person who hadn’t managed to screw up something they were honestly capable of. Humans are imperfect – her mistake happened to be nationally televised. Wasn’t the first.

  • Jolylady

The announcer stated, “singing our National Anthem to honor America”. She dishonored it but her horrendous version of a jumbled mess of mixed up notes and words! The girl from Glee was fantastic…they should have had her sing it. Did anyone actually listen to her rehearse?

  • Anonymous

As MARINE who has fought in combat…she might as well have pissed on the United States Armed Services AND the constitution. Really??? I hope she looses her voice to a horrible cancer and then drops dead. This country is going to hell…slowly. Why all of the “PRO” armed services announcements just minutes before she butchered OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM?? Are you F’n kidding me. That was an absolute disgrace!!

And the half time show…the one-eyed…two-eyed…four toed peas…I wish they had black eyes and couldn’t see to make it to the stage. WOW!!! The country and the NFL need to stop drinking from the same cool-aid cup. Get someone who gives a damn about really knowing the NATIONAL ANTHEM for pete’s sake.

    Simply awful.

  • Anonymous

Too bad some humans are not like this message, where when I make a mistake / error I can press the back button to get rid of your stupid A**. You idiot.

  • Somogy

You hope she looses her voice to a horrible cancer and drops dead?

And I suppose if it had been your mother you’d wish her the same tiding of comfort and joy.

  • Somogy

Well, in all fairness, you can’t press backspace to get rid of me, or Christina Aguilera. Sorry (:

  • http://www.facebook.com/Judy.Bragg.Skeen Judy Skeen

Seriously. Maybe she should have written the correct words down so she could get them right. Didn’t she learn our National Anthem in elementary school??

  • Guest

We are such a low brow dumbed down everything culture in this country today that the average person doesn’t even know what truly great singing and artistry is today. I’m so sick “pop” renditions of The National Anthem! Even though Whitney jazzed it up and the harmonzation was contemporized, she sang beautiful (and I’m not a W.H. fan). Sad they can’t engage more legit singers (like Whitney) or a great legit Broadway or opera singer to sing our great National Anthem. Anyone who knows music is aware that it is a rangey and difficult piece to sing to begin with (there has been talk through history to replace it with something more singable for the average Joe or Jane), hence at a huge media event like the super bowl it should be sung and interpreted by a legit singer who has the pipes and chops to do the piece justice and not make a trashy mess of it like C. A. did today. Would that it could have been Renee Fleming, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Catherine Zeta Jones, or any other legit voiced classical or Broadway singer. It is about time people (especially young people) get exposed to truly great singing. I wish there was an American Idol TV show for Broadway, Cabaret and Classical singers.

  • justaregulargal

If she were on American Idol…Simon would have kicked her azz out for not knowing the words!!! Seriously… he is British and he has a clue… Learn the words or don’t sing the song. And by the way, sing our National Anthem right, or don’t do it. We don’t need new versions, the first one from Francis Scott Key works just fine. Totally annoyed with xtina.

I’m sorry but she is supposedly a “star” and experienced performer and she makes millions. If she (and her agent) agreed for her to sing the National Anthem, she should have known it cold and without all crap she added to it. For heaven’s sake, it is our NATIONAL ANTHEM! Don’t make excuses for someone with the supposed experience (and who is likely not singing it for FREE!). I’ve heard better singing and artistry in many high school musical performances.

  • Anonymous

TOTALLY agree. This cuckoo culture that just showing up exempts you from any sort of critical review is a joke. That was the worst possible rendition you could imagine:

    1) She looked like hell, like she was out partying way late the night before (I would bet she was)
    2) She sounded like hell – same potential reasons
    3) She messed up the words
    4) She was trying to put her own goofy “spin” on singing it, more concerned with doing her own rendition than doing it right – again, putting herself ahead of singing it right.

All these apologists – the National Anthem at the Super Bowl is bigger than Christina Aguilera. She’s getting critically massacred for her performance, as she should. No sympathy whatsoever.

Either treat it with the respect it deserves or don’t do it. She said in an interview this week she’d been “doing it since she was 7.” I bet she took it more seriously when she was 7. Looked and sounded like she felt she could just show up and get it done. She didn’t take it seriously, and it showed. I don’t think it had anything to do with nervousness. Had to do with a lack of preparation.

ONE MUST KNOW FIRST THE LYRICS TO OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM…NOT A PERFECT VOICE ..OUR COUNTRY OUR SOLDIERS OUR HEART…

MONEY MEDIA THATS ENTERTAINMENT, SO VERY SAD

    D.CLAIRE MCGIBNEY

  • Steve Tolliver

I am a service member and believe our troops need a better representation for our national anthem than that. We always perform rehearsals and dry runs before a combat mission and she should have done more to be ready for the 2 minute event.

  • sharae

Research this one guys…she has sung this numerous times for different sporting events across the country since she was 11 years old…she is now 30, she should have known the words, was she high???

  • Anonymous

“I have been performing the Anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true,” Aguilera said.
    ——————
More fuel to the theory that she just didn’t prepare like she should have…she was getting shaky in line 3 and blew it in line 4. She figured she could roll out of bed and sing it. That’s what it looked like she did, anyway. She didn’t look good, she didn’t sound good. She cut short a lot of notes. I’ll bet some sort of excuses start pouring out (“She was sick, etc.”) before another story comes out that she was partying until 7am.

Here’s a link to Aguilera doing the National Anthem – 19 years ago. I would have settled for this version. If she wasn’t “nervous” then she certainly wasn’t “nervous” now. She wasn’t prepared. That’s the reality. All of you Christina apologists need to explain why she was able to do it sufficiently at age 11 yet couldn’t do it tonight. She didn’t take it seriously. That was evident in her appearance, her performance, and her mistake.

  • packersgirl

Ok, it’s “Our Country’s Anthem”, it is war time, it has eight lines, she has sang it for twenty years at other events, she is a “Professional”, she gets PAID ALOT of money to do it, she knew she was doing it and had plenty of time to rehearse and get it right. It is something that HAS to be done correctly. Fact is…she looked like crap, she sounded like crap, she screwed up ROYALLY!!! She owes this country and our troops an apology. This is what she gets paid to do, no excuses no matter what song but especially not one of such importance. I am sickened and shocked at not only her, the idiot sports writer and of all of you that feel sorry for her because it might of been scary for her. GET REAL!!!! She is a superstar, you DO NOT screw that up at any cost.

How about the 11-year-old girl here? Wonder what the difference was – perhaps that one of them was trying and the other one wasn’t?

Hint – THEY’RE the same girl!

  • Sweetdaddyroses

i’m sure that we’ll hear how she is checking into a rehab very soon. that will absolve her of any accountability for this latest debacle. what a total abomination! as soon as she blew it i started shouting at my television screen, “she blew it! she blew it!”

there is a part of me, the compassionate part, that truly feels sorry and embarrassed for her. that part is immediately put into check, however, by the realistic part of me that knows this woman is a very wealthy professional who commanded a very large payday to sing our national anthem at the superbowl.

    repeat, OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM!

the very least that she could have done would have been to sing the song the way that it was intended to be sung. no! not only did she choose not to sing the melody to the song the way it was written! she couldn’t even sing the words right, either! what an absolute disgrace!

if you grabbed an ordinary person out of the crowd, with no prior notice, and asked them to sing this song, it would be understandable for them to completely annihilate francis scott key’s immortal piece. for this woman, this professional, to butcher the song in the manner that she did, for the money she was paid, is inexcusable! nothing short of a public apology is acceptable! you owe us that much, xtina. you certainly didn’t deliver on your contract to sing our national anthem. that’s for sure!

  • Daoldgoat

Time you and all socalled preformers learn them. Soldiers have died to make us free. If you have children first learn the words then teach your children. I don’t blame you they need to teach children thing like ihis in first grade. I know they did 60 years ago.

Christina, you’re not Whitney Houston. Sing the way you know how to sing. Don’t try mimicing others.

Do you think that any of these “modern” geeks will EVER sing/play the anthem as written?? This crud has been taking place for decades now.

  • Joisey

Maybe as a citizen of the United States of America, you should learn the words! And, btw, she sounded awful. Out of respect for our country and anthem, it should just be sung straight forward. It was all about her hitting and holding notes and rifting. I thought it sounded horrible. Could’ve thought of five people off the top of my head who could’ve done a better, more heartfelt job. Oh well, moving on to next year’s controversy!! LOL.

if you dont thonk she messed it up play the video and read it. Its even funnier then!

wow how do you mess this up?

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

if you don’t think she messed up just read the words as the video plays up top.

This makes me laugh even harder!

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The National Anthem was never meant to be sung as a solo—-it belongs to all of us and we should all SING it together. Some day, the people who design these big events will stop to think about what it means for all of us to stand together and sing the one song that unites us. We are the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave and I want to sing it, too!

  • Jeannie

    1) I knew immediately she had screwed it up. Unlike you.
    2) I can’t figure out your second point. Seems like English is your second language. It’s my first language.
    3) I have not been to one sporting event where they sang the citizenship test before the start of the game, you idiotic bimbo.

In order to become a US citizen, immigrants must pass the Naturalization Test. American citizenship bestows the right to vote, improves the likelihood of family members living in other countries to come and live in the US, gives eligibility for federal jobs, and can be a way to demonstrate loyalty to the US. Applicants must get 6 answers out of 10 in an oral exam to pass the test. According to US Citizenship and Immigration services, 92 percent of applicants pass this test.

You must get 58 or more of these test questions correct in order to pass.
