Colts Punter Pat McAfee Wasn’t Drunk And Swimming In That Canal

Pat McAfee has what many consider the cushiest job in the NFL: that of the Colts’ punter.

That comfort level apparently leaves him with a little too much time on his hands.

McAfee was arrested early Wednesday morning on suspicion of public intoxication after going for a quick swim in Indianapolis’ Central Canal.

Police picked up the second-year punter at around 5 a.m. in the Broad Ripple section of town when a motorist stopped at a red light called 911 after being approached by a dripping wet, shirtless McAfee.

When questioned, McAfee delivered a beautiful non-sequitur by denying swimming in the canal, attributing his wetness to an earlier rain storm, but admitting his shirt was floating in the canal.

The stumbling McAfee also blew a 0.15 in a portable Breathalyzer, nearly twice the legal limit, and told the police when asked how many drinks he’d had that night, “A lot because I am drunk.” (And yet, we still have to write “suspicion” and “alleged”!)

He was released on his own recognizance just before noon.

McAfee is the fourth Colts player arrested for alcohol related revelry this year. I guess we should have seen this coming when he tweeted Tuesday afternoon:

Bye week bye week bye week. Time to get some ish done. Happy Tuesday Party people, I hope you’re all kickin’ todays ass.

Too bad we can’t link this to some type of head injury; it would fit so well with the rest of the week’s NFL headlines.
