Darrelle Revis Expects To Miss 1-2 Weeks With Hamstring Strain
The Jets’ 28-14 win over the Patriots yesterday was huge for their season, but it came with a price: Darrelle Revis, the team’s star cornerback and best player, strained his hamstring during the game and now expects to miss one to two weeks of action.
Revis’ hamstring gave him some trouble during the week as well (coach Rex Ryan blamed himself for playing Revis too much in the first game), but he was pronounced a full go for Sunday.
You’re probably already familiar with the play on which Revis aggravated his injury – remember that spectacular one-handed touchdown grab by Randy Moss? Well, you might have noticed Moss had a little help on the play – in the form of Revis pulling up lame just shy of the end zone. And you almost certainly noticed that, after that play, Revis was done for the game.
Well, today Revis had an MRI, and the results can’t be what the Jets wanted to hear – though Revis’ 1-2 game estimated recovery time is slightly better than the “at least two games” prognosis originally delivered by ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
Though Revis said he’s “not concerned” with the injury, you can bet the Jets are – even if their next two games (vs. the Dolphins and the Bills, both on the road) aren’t against prolific passing teams. This is likely going to be a concern for the team for the rest of the year.
And it’s hard to think this doesn’t have something to do with Revis’ infamous holdout. We already mentioned Ryan wondering if he played Revis too much in Week 1 – he would have had no such reservations if it weren’t for the holdout. Even Revis acknowledged the ‘difference between being in shape and being in football shape’ when he first returned to the team.
Even if Revis’ injury happened at the best possible time any injury could have, it’s still an injury to the Jets’ best player. And if either the Dolphins or Bills (if he misses that game, too) have an unexpectedly good passing day, expect to hear a lot about Revis’ absence. The Jets have the talent to still do well in without him, but it’ll certainly feel a bit more like Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson are out on an island.
