David Tyree Says He’d Give Up Giants’ Super Bowl To Stop Gay Marriage. Well, Then.

David Tyree made a really awesome catch once, and as a consequence, his views on gay marriage will be reported on, should there happen to be anything noteworthy about them. As it turns out, there is. The other day, Tyree went on record as saying gay marriage could be the first step toward anarchy, and now he’s taking it further…he says he’d give back that helmet catch and Super Bowl victory if it meant marriage would remain the exclusive domain of heterosexuals.

Gay marriage is an especially big issue in New York, as the state may soon legalize it. That’s why you’re seeing people like the New York Rangers’ Sean Avery lobbying for it – as well as some blowback from the other side. Tyree, to put it mildly, doesn’t make it a secret where he stands:

Asked if he’d give up the Super Bowl to stop gay marriage, Tyree said: “Honestly, I probably would.”

“Nothing means more to me than that my God would be honored,” he said. “Being the fact that I firmly believe that God created and ordained marriage between a man and a woman, I believe that that’s something that should be fought for at all costs.”

OK, so he would give up making one of the greatest plays in NFL history. Well, he really must feel strongly about this, we’ll give him that. What we’re really confused by is how on the one hand, Tyree says allowing gay marriage will lead to a “continual softening to the backbone of our society,” and on the other:

He said he doesn’t oppose benefits for gay couples[.]

Don’t get us wrong, we’re glad to see Tyree doesn’t seem to harbor any personal resentment toward anyone, but on the one hand he’s talking about the downfall of society, leading to “who knows, polygamy.” On the other, all he’s saying he has a problem with is attaching the word “marriage” to same-sex relationships. Something doesn’t seem to add up there.

Tyree said he has “no care of [his] image.” That’s a good thing, since he’s clearly under a microscope for speaking out the way he has. He’s within his right to do so, of course, but when the issue is so hot-button, when his stance is one that would hold people back, and when one considers that by hypothetically giving back the Super Bowl, he’d be forfeiting the only reason anyone is paying attention to him on this issue to begin with…yeah, we get the backlash.

What amazes me is that people care about what athletes think —he gets paid to play ball, period.  I could care less what his personal views are (unless he has possibly killed somebody ahem – Ray)…as long as he plays.  That said, it amazes me when people pick and choose what they want to take a stance on in the name of their religion….Has David had sex with anybody other than spouse in his LIFETIME?  There’s some scriptures on sex outside of marriage….Did David judge anybody – at least 5 scriptures cover this…. etc, etc
