The Eagles Were Calling Out The Jets’ Coverages On Sunday

It’s hard enough trying to defend against an offense as potent as the Philadelphia Eagles. Now imagine trying to defend them when they know exactly what coverage you’re setting up from one play to the next. It’s no wonder they scored four touchdowns in their first seven possessions against the New York Jets on Sunday.

This, according to Jets safety Eric Smith, was exactly how the Eagles were able to stay one step ahead of the Jets. Smith told ESPN, “They’d line up, look at us, look at Vick, and (say), ‘Oh, they’re in Cover Zero’ or ‘They’re in Cover One.’ They did a good job of studying, a good job of preparing for the game.”

Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine took a little wind out of the Eagles sails after the game, essentially calling out Smith and safety Brodney Pool, who was filling in for the injured Jim Leonhard. Pettine went on to say that the Jets scaled back their playbook in order to simplify it for Smith and Pool. That’s probably the last thing either player wanted to hear.

The bottom line is, the Eagles spanked the Jets and their self-proclaimed dominant defense. Whether or not they were simply prepared for whatever the Jets threw at them or they ran into a Jets team with a dumbed-down playbook, this kind of finger pointing seems to be commonplace when everyone, and I mean everyone, plays a little Monday morning quarterback after a shellacking.
