Pennsylvania Governor: Postponing Football Game Shows Why “The Chinese Are Kicking Our Butt”
Mediaite looked at this already (and so did we), but we can’t ignore the fantastic comments of Ed Rendell, governor of Pennsylvania, on the postponing of this weekend’s Eagles-Vikings game from Sunday to Tuesday. Rendell, you see, thought rescheduling was emblematic of the United States’ descent into “a nation of wusses.” And he didn’t stop there.
Rendell is concerned about our country losing preeminence in the world, and said in no uncertain terms he’s got another country in mind that would have handled all this differently:
“The Chinese are kicking our butt in everything. If this was in China do you think the Chinese would have called off the game? People would have been marching down to the stadium, they would have walked and they would have been doing calculus on the way down.”
There’s just so much going on here. Apparently the Chinese have suddenly acquired a love for American football, for one thing. And then there’s the calculus comment. Oh, that calculus comment. Yes, it was meant to reflect positively on the work ethic of Chinese people, but “azns are good at math lol” is such a tired stereotype at this point that even comments meant in a good way invariably sound like lazy pigeonholing.
Also, if the Chinese are so devoted to taking over the world and will let nothing impede their path to national greatness, etc., etc. – why are they wasting so much effort on attending a football game (or equivalent sporting event)? They can probably do more calculus while they’re not distracted with an arduous walk through bad weather, anyway.
Yes, we see what Rendell is trying to say through his questionable wording. But we’d say postponing was the right move. It wasn’t pretty out there Sunday night, and it got worse as the night wore on. It was no time to travel at all, and definitely no time for a ton of cars to be on the road. In fact, the weather was so bad that we’d bet a lot of people with tickets to the game might have rather just stayed home and done calculus instead.
