Did Floyd Mayweather Make $1 Million Betting Against Tim Tebow?

Even when the Broncos were winning six straight games earlier this season, Tim Tebow still had his share of doubters. Considering the Broncos were winning mostly low-scoring games, many against weak teams, by coming back at the end after doing almost nothing offensively for the majority of the game, this was understandable. But even the most hardened Tebow skeptic would have been hard-pressed to bet $1 million on the Broncos losing, even against a top team like the Patriots (and top quarterback like Tom Brady).

Well, either boxer Floyd Mayweather really doubts Tebow’s abilities, is really confident in Brady’s, or just had a really strong hunch. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “the buzz around local sports books” indicates that Mayweather indeed put a cool million on the Patriots to come out on top in Denver on December 18. And, well, New England came out on top 41-23: as much as one can say someone who allegedly bet $1 million on a football game chose wisely, Mayweather did. We can’t know for totally sure whether Mayweather actually plunked down the bet, though:

Reached for comment Wednesday, Mike Colbert, Cantor Gaming sports book director at M Resort, wouldn’t confirm or deny the rumblings.

Of course, not denying the rumor tends to make one believe it’s true, as does Colbert’s endorsement of Mayweather as “a valued customer who frequents the books quite often.” And there’s also that fact that, both the Review-Journal and Deadspin point out, Mayweather’s been known to tweet pictures like this.

But as long as no one officially confirms it, we’ll never know for 100 percent sure. And even if Mayweather did win the alleged big bucks, it might not be of much immediate use to him – he’s beginning a three-month jail sentence soon. Even though we’re guessing Mayweather has enough in the bank that $1 million here and there probably won’t make or break him, we also can’t help but wonder if a seven-figure bet against his team, even more than the two losses, is what truly marks the end – for now – of Tebow Time.
