Howard Stern Offers A Rambling, Explicit, Largely Accurate Summary Of The Penn State Scandal

The horrors of the child rape allegations against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky are such that just about everyone has weighed in. That’s what happens in the face of just about the worst thing imaginable: everyone needs an outlet for their (entirely justified) outrage and disgust, and that’s far from a bad thing. So while Howard Stern’s might not be the first opinion you’d seek on an A1 news story like this, he shared his opinion today while having Al Michaels on as a guest, and you can see it here:

…And honestly, with a lot of what he said, Stern wasn’t wrong. We don’t believe Joe Paterno’s senile – if anything, he’s remained remarkably mentally alert through the years. But as far as not doing much coaching anymore, as far as both Paterno and Mike McQueary (and on and on, up the Penn State chain of command – this was a failure on an institutional level) not doing absolutely everything they could have to stop Sandusky, it’s hard to argue.

And really, not being senile would mean Paterno’s all the more responsible to do everything in his power to make sure Sandusky isn’t in a position to hurt kids. As we’ve all seen from Sandusky’s alleged crimes continuing into 2009, Paterno and everyone else in a position to stop it didn’t do enough. And that’s enough to earn the ripping they got today from Michaels (who brought it himself, with that “How the hell did this stay under wraps?” line) and Stern.
