NFL Not Punishing Jets For Alleged Locker Room Harassment
Over the weekend, the NFL announced that though they disapproved of the Jets’ conduct toward much-discussed reporter Ines Sainz, they wouldn’t punish the team. And if that wasn’t enough to wrap up this crazy story, the Jets’ win over the Patriots yesterday sure was.
The NFL’s report on the Jets certainly wasn’t glowing – they said there was “unprofessional conduct,” and also said every team in the league needs additional training in how to properly treat all reporters. But they also praised owner Woody Johnson for dealing with the situation quickly, and even other reporters said the locker room atmosphere wasn’t “over the top,” even if it was “juvenile.”
And all that was good news for the Jets to begin with, but it didn’t compare to the media goodwill they engendered on the field yesterday. As SI’s Richard Deitsch pointed out, even the New York tabloids are fully back on the bandwagon.
Really, it seems like the majority of media members were as eager to forget the whole Sainz controversy as the Jets themselves were. Even for the day’s losing quarterback, Tom Brady, the focus was (justifiably) what he said about his team’s play, rather than what their hypothetical conduct around Sainz would have been like.
Ultimately, the Sainz saga was more or less something to do during the week while there were no actual games going on. And as much as we’ve had our fun with the whole story around here, we’re ready for the focus to turn back to actual football, too. There’s no better way to end sideshow distractions than playing the game – just ask Mike Vick.
