Amuse Yourself With This Delightful Fat Guy Reception

For many football fans, few events bring more joy than a fat guy touchdown. Said fat guys, of course, don’t experience the joy of scoring often – if ever – so when they get the chance, they savor that moment, dammit, and we do the same right along with them.

Well, the play you’ll see below isn’t a fat guy touchdown, but might document an even more rare event: the fat guy reception. Sure, the tackle-eligible play is nothing new, but it’s not exactly one you see come out of the woodwork too often…because, well, these guys are too big to do much with the ball. But sometimes, you don’t have to do much. Sometimes, a set of good hands and a simple first down will do. And if that’s what you want, 6-5, 315-pound 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley is your man:

This play is everything everyone loves about linemen getting to do things they normally don’t (except for that he didn’t score). Look at the enthusiasm in that first-down signal. Look at him try and truck a couple guys to get a couple extra yards. The glee visible through Staley’s facemask. And the best part: the play worked perfectly. 17 yards on a tackle-eligible pass? Can’t hope for much more than that…but we can hope Staley earned himself a few more touches.

I played Football with Staley in high school (Rockford High School). Staley in high school was actually a Tight End and one of the fastest guys on the team with incredible hands. There’s nothing shocking about that play, he’s still got it!
