Your Wince-Inducing NFL Injury Of The Day

The Jets have more than enough going wrong as it is. They can’t get into the end zone to save their lives, and with just one preseason tuneup game left, the offense looks almost completely out of sorts. Even if every potential key contributor were completely healthy, Gang Green would have plenty of issues to sort out before kickoff against the Bills September 9.

But of course, not all the Jets’ potential contributors on offense are totally healthy – and thanks to a particularly bad injury last night, one of them won’t be a contributor at all. Earlier today the Jets waived tight end Josh Baker, and he’ll now go on the team’s injured reserve list (as we understand it, as long as no other team claims him in the interim). Why is Baker going on IR? Well last night, this happened:

Damn. That play resulted in a torn ACL for Baker, who had a catch for four yards in the game prior to the injury. A terrible break for him, and bad for the Jets too – as the New York Daily News noted, the team was planning to lean heavily on multiple tight ends this year.

And speaking of that, more bad news for the Jets on that front: starting tight end Dustin Keller also left last night’s game with an injury. His, though, isn’t nearly as serious, though, and he expects to play in the regular season opener. According to that last link, the Jets are resting their starters in their last preseason game, so Keller wouldn’t have played then anyway. One has to wonder, though: given how badly at least the Jets’ offense is struggling, couldn’t those starters use all the extra work they can get before the games start counting?
