NFL Finally Delivers News: Josh Gordon's One Year Suspension Upheld

  • Eric Goldschein

According to Adam Schefter, it’s official: Josh Gordon has been suspended for a full year.

We were just giving the NFL a hard time for not releasing the results of Gordon’s appeal — they must have heard us. As Schefter notes, this ban lasts a year, which means Gordon will be out until just before the start of next year. No OTAs, no training camp, nothing until Aug. 27, 2015.

Honestly, this is bigger news than the Brian Hoyer/Johnny Manziel QB battle. The Browns had Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell under center for most of last year, and Gordon still excelled. His loss is huge. Look:

As a reminder: Gordon was suspended for a year because of a second failed drug test (a failed test kept him out of two games last year, negotiated down from four games). Ray Rice, who punched his future wife in the face and knocked her out cold, will serve a suspension one-eighth as severe. Gordon violated the law and NFL rules, but no one in the world could possibly argue that his crime, even as a repeat offender, was worse than Rice’s. That’s the NFL for you.

It’s possible that Gordon could be reinstated before 2015 training camp, depending on his behavior, but it must be noted that he hasn’t done himself any favors during the appeal process:

Finally, here’s Gordon’s statement on the decision, via the NFLPA:

“I’d like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans. I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didn’t exercise better discretion and judgment in my case. I would like to sincerely thank the people who have been incredibly supportive of me during this challenging time, including my family, my agent, my union, my legal team, and the Cleveland Browns staff.”

Let’s all agree that Gordon used as much discretion and judgement as the league office, shall we? Still, a shame for people who love good football to lose Gordon for a year. His game will be missed.
