Junior Seau’s Grieving Mother: “I Heard A Bad Voice On Wednesday Morning”

The grieving mother of Junior Seau spoke to reporters after learning that her son had died. And as you would expect from any mother who was dealing with the death of her son — in this case, in front of TV cameras, and reportedly minutes after seeing her son’s body (as is Samoan custom) — it was extremely emotional to watch.

She was also amazingly courageous, and thanked the crowd that had begun to congregate outside Seau’s home for showing their love.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “I don’t know anything, why this happened. I am shocked. I appreciate everybody showing your love. Showing your love to my son.”

But Seau’s mother, while saying her son was joking in some recent conversations, also mentioned, briefly, a “bad voice” she heard when they spoke on Wednesday. Whether that means that her son didn’t sound like himself this morning remains unclear.

“Monday, Tuesday, me and my husband went to visit him,” she said. “He was out of town. He was talking to me. He was joking to me. He know I heard a bad voice on Wednesday morning.”
