Found: The Most Kansas City Chiefs Play Ever
The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-13 last night on MNF, mostly because the Kansas City Chiefs do Kansas City Chiefs things. In one such instance, Pittsburgh backup quarterback Byron Leftwich (who had entered the game for an injured Ben Roethlisberger) threw an incomplete pass that was initially ruled a fumble. Kansas City linebacker Justin Houston picked up the fumble and ran it in for the score, celebrating with teammates and earning a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. A stupid move, but it’s not like Kansas City scores TDs all that often.
On replay, it’s clear that Leftwich’s arm was going forward and the pass should have been ruled incomplete. And the play was in fact reviewed officially because it was a scoring play, so Pittsburgh did end up retaining possession. But for whatever reason, that 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty wasn’t wiped off the board. In theory, the play should have been ruled dead once the ball hit the ground, so that group end zone celebration technically never happened because Houston never recovered the fumble (that really was an incomplete pass) and scored a TD. Instead, the penalty was still assessed and Pittsburgh received a first down and 15 free yards.
Your 2012 Kansas City Chiefs, people.
