Here’s Your Latest Update On NFL Wheeling And Dealing
Yesterday, we began the day by looking at some of the major moves of the NFL’s condensed free agency period. And since the moves never stopped happening – hey, why not start today off the same way? Following is a look at some of the biggest moves that happened too late for yesterday’s update: starting with literally – and potentially, figuratively – the biggest.
Albert Haynesworth’s wildly (but not shockingly) disappointing stay in Washington is over: he’s headed to the Patriots (as long as he can pass a physical, which, um…yeah). New England didn’t give up a whole lot to get him (fifth-round pick), so many are praising the move, while others are pointing out that if, say, the Raiders made this trade, they’d be ridiculed. True, although we’d say the Patriots’ track record has earned them a bit of leeway we shouldn’t afford Al Davis.
As for the Redskins: Haynesworth is the second big-name, big-money acquisition they’ve moved, following their trade of Donovan McNabb to the Vikings. Are we witnessing a new Redskins organization? Well, not totally: they’re still bringing players in, too. Players like cornerback Josh Wilson, who’ll be making the short trek down from Baltimore.
Other noteworthy players on the move: Reggie Bush is headed to Miami ( it’s official) pending his approval, while one of the top receivers available, Sidney Rice, signed with the Seahawks. It’s still anyone’s guess who’ll be throwing those passes to Rice (we just know it won’t be Matt Leinart), but he’s a nice option to have for receiving them.
And some fine players are staying right where they are. Kicker Adam Vinatieri (as well as safety Melvin Bullitt) will remain with the Indianapolis Colts. The San Diego Chargers decided they were keen enough on keeping safety Eric Weddle in the fold that they gave him $40 million ($19 million guaranteed) to stick around. If you’re anything like, well, a lot of people, upon hearing that news you thought: “Eric Weddle? $40 million?” Nevertheless, it’s a done deal.
We’ll be keeping an eye on player movement throughout the day. If Nnamdi Asomugha joins forces with Darrelle Revis SuperUltraVoltronGodzillaCaptainPlanetCaptainAmericaGigantorCornerback3000, or elects to put all the conflicting rumors to rest by simply joining every team in the NFL, we’ll let you know.
