NFL Referee Alberto Riveron Calls Penalty en Español
CBS viewers, EverBank Field spectators, and the closed captioning stenographer all did double takes when referee Alberto Riveron recited the first penalty call of Sunday’s Jaguars-Bengals game in Spanish as his own contribution to Hispanic Heritage Month.
Riveron is a Cuban refugee who came to the United States when he was five years old. In 2008, he became the fist Latino referee in NFL history. It’s fitting, then, that he could add his own spin to the NFL’s recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month — even if it left the non-Spanish-speaking listeners a bit confused, and CBS announcer Bill Macatee stating it was “Spanish” Heritage Month.
