Redskins Suspend Albert Haynesworth For Rest Of Season

The Washington Redskins have suspended defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth four games without pay for “conduct detrimental to the club” (like not speaking to his coach). Unless the 5-7 ‘Skins somehow make the playoffs, Haynesworth, in the second season of a 7-year, $100 million deal, is done for the season. On the bright side, though, he’s trending on Twitter.

Haynesworth was not active for the Redskins during Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, and it’s been causing a stir in the DC media. There have been varying reports about Haynesworth’s absence. Some have cited “illness” while others claim tardiness to Friday’s team meeting as the reasons for the suspension. There has also been speculation that Haynesworth showed up hung over to a team meeting, which he disputed yesterday on a Washington radio station:

“For these people to make up lies to try to make me look bad is ridiculous,” Haynesworth said. “I think they are cowards, and if they have something to say, they should come to my face, not run to the media and try to blast me behind my back.”

“There are some kind of haters or something like that in the organization, that they don’t like me,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s players or coaches. I don’t know who it is. Obviously, there’s somebody who doesn’t like me, which is fine. But when you go out there and start making up lies, I’ve got something to say.”

Yesterday, teammate Phillip Daniels publicly pleaded with Haynesworth to man up and toughen up, which didn’t help Haynesworth’s case. Now, Deadspin provides us with photo evidence that he was indeed enjoying a libation or two Thursday night, which will lend even more credence to the “hung over” theory.

Haynesworth made headlines this offseason for being out of shape, and now the speculation regarding his fat contract will ensue. The ‘Skins have already paid Haynesworth $32 million, including a $21 million bonus this offseason. It seems a matter of time before Daniel Snyder tries to recoup some of that money.

This sums up Haynesworth’s career with the Redskins (click, then when new image loads, click again to see gif in all its glory):
