Darrelle Revis Hangs Up On Mike Francesa

Godfather of sports talk radio and noted geography expert Mike Francesa is not a fan of the New York Jets.
Throughout this season, the WFAN host has consistently railed on the team, its players, and its coaches, and his anti-Jets campaign was typified by a 14-minute rant earlier this month, in which he charged the Jets with “mortifying America” (or “Americer,” in Francesa’s Long Island parlance). How much of that has to do with the fact that the Jets don’t do interviews on his show — and, instead, on the competing ESPN station — we don’t know. We have a feeling, but again, we don’t know.

For as long as Francesa has criticized the Jets, though, there’s been one beacon of hope in his otherwise bleak view of the team: cornerback Darrelle Revis, who Francesa has repeatedly dubbed “the best defensive player in the game.” Coincidentally, Revis is the only guy on the team that does interviews on Francesa’s show. But I digress.
In every Jets-hating segment — and there have been many this year — Francesa has always found an opportunity to talk about Revis glowingly. He talks about him so glowingly, in fact, that you start to think Francesa believes that they’re buddies. And they might’ve been, in much the same way that a popular kid is friends with a not-so-popular kid because his parents made him.
Welp. Pretend friendship over. During an interview on WFAN today, Mike spoke to “the last Jet that would talk to [him].” And after the interview, it’s safe to say that no Jets will talk to him.
The most heartbreaking thing about this? How long it takes Mike Francesa to realize that Darrelle Revis is actually mad at him, and that he has long since passed the point of comfortable ribbing. Like not-so-popular kids everywhere, subtle social cues are apparently not his strong suit.
