Ryan Tannehill Thinks The Chiefs Are In The NFC East, Among Other Things
The fourth installment of this season’s Hard Knocks brought us a few noteworthy moments Tuesday night. A bromance between a few rookies trying to make the team. A preseason stinker in the rain at
Joe Robbie Dolphins Land Shark Sun Life Stadium that took place in front of about five fans. The gut-wrenching meeting between Jeff Ireland and recently traded corner Vontae Davis (harder to watch than any cut in the program’s history, IMO).
But none were quite as peculiar as the quiz Matt Moore gave Ryan Tannehill regarding the NFL’s divisional makeup. It’s one Ryan might want to have back. Via Kissing Suzy Kolber:
OK, in Ryan’s defense, this isn’t the kind of stuff he really needs to know to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. In fact, his complete absence of knowledge about the NFL’s divisional makeup could be advantageous, as it leaves more room in his brain for stuff like memorizing the Dolphins playbook and remembering his wedding anniversary. And of course, you want your quarterback to have a short-term memory when it comes to putting mistakes behind him, and to go meticulously through the season on a week by week basis.
So you didn’t grow up in NFL territory. I get it. That’s fine. But this? This?
“I don’t really know the divisions, even conferences. I know most of the conferences, but some of those I really have no clue and they don’t make sense…”
I’m not a math guy, but when you have two total things, I think what constitutes “most of the things” is more than one, but not a whole two. That’s a tough get without much fractional wiggle room in terms of NFL conferences, of which there are strictly two. Does he know the American Football Conference, and just that the other conference ends in “Football Conference”? Does he know that both end in “Football Conference” but can’t recall the “American” and “National”? That part was just a little weird to me.
And I hate to break it to you Ryan, but your Dolphins do play in Miami, which sits on the Atlantic coast of Florida, which I’m pretty sure is as far East as you can go. Sure, it would make sense for them to play in the AFC South too, but compasses go four ways, my friend. Just gotta live with it.
