Did The Colts’ Vontae Davis Accidentally Expose Former Teammate Sean Smith’s Violation Of League Tampering Rules On Twitter?

March 9th is the first day soon-to-be NFL free agents are allowed to speak with other teams, and any contact prior to that date is considered tampering. In 2008, a past tampering penalty imposed by Roger Goodell to the San Francisco 49ers saw the loss of a 5th round pick and the forced exchange of third round picks with the Chicago Bears (Lance Briggs was the player in question). In 2011, the Detroit Lions lost a 7th round pick and were forced to trade 5th rounders with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Earlier today, Indianapolis cornerback Vontae Davis, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, tweeted this:
I seen my dude Sean Smith last night he said he talking to KC him & B Flowers will makes a good Duo
— Vontae Davis (@VontaeDavis23) February 27, 2013
Today is February 27. As in, before March 9th. So we’re thinking that Vontae Davis owes Miami cornerback and pending free agent Sean Smith an apology, because he accidentally outed his “dude” engaging in illegal free agent practices on Twitter. Or did he?
My Twitter was Hack I did not see Sean Smith last night!!
— Vontae Davis (@VontaeDavis23) February 27, 2013
Oh! Clever backtracking. It must have been the devious hacker with an ultra specific and nitpicking agenda in the dining room with the candlestick.
Wait: what’s that, Sean Smith? Vontae Davis is lying? CAN’T be.
“Ok this is getting out of hand, I’ve never talked to any other team besides the Miami Dolphins. Yes I talked to vontae and I told him Al Harris (our former coach) got the job up in KC and that I talked to him a few days ago to tell him congrats. That’s it! Now why he interpreted that as “talking to KC” idk but there is NOTHING going on! This is ridiculous”
Also, these tweets:
Whoa! No I didn’t RT @omarkelly RT @vontaedavis23: I seen my dude Sean Smith last night he said he talking to KC … tmi.me/M2iSP
— Sean Smith (@SeanSMITH24) February 27, 2013
Lol He panicked, tried to help… not the best idea but I appreciate it RT @paulcauchi @seansmith24 he said his twitter got hacked
— Sean Smith (@SeanSMITH24) February 27, 2013
So Davis’ Twitter account was never hacked? You’re telling us that no one schemed to lure Kansas City and Sean Smith into lukewarm water worthy of mildly retributive penalties from the NFL? This is all very confusing.
So what do we know, really? We know that Vontae Davis spoke with Sean Smith at some unconfirmed time (not last night). We know that Vontae Davis thinks Sean Smith spoke with the Kansas City Chiefs. We know that Vontae Davis panicked and blamed his Twitter gaffe on some mysterious-not-actually-existent hacker. We know that Sean Smith thinks Vontae Davis is kind of an idiot. As for the whether or not any tampering went on, we still have no idea.
But if the NFL ends up fining Sean Smith in any way for all of this, Vontae Davis should probably take care of it.
