UPDATE: ESPN Apologizes For Michael Sam Shower Reporting
Apparently, Michael Sam has been avoiding Rams’ team showers — or at least that’s what ESPN has decided to report on this afternoon’s SportsCenter. Quoting an unnamed defensive teammate, Josina Anderson told Jay Crawford, “Sam is ‘respecting our space’ and that from his perspective he seems to think Michael Sam is waiting to take a shower as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable.”
She then went on to say that DT Kendall Langford noticed his absence as well, noting that there could be “a million reasons” why he hasn’t been seen showering with the guys. Soooo then he’s not doing this to make everyone more comfortable with his sexuality? What the hell’s going on here?
Hey ESPN, we’re not so sure this kind of vague description of an intimate situation requires airtime. Ya know, the “Is the gay guy scared of dicks” angle. Ya, try not to publicize the behind-closed-doors details about team showers without a quote from Michael Sam about how he’s been navigating the Rams’ locker room, and why.
Leave the boner speculation to Barstool…
Teammate Chris Long joined the chorus of people objecting to ESPN’s reporting on Michael Sam’s locker room habits with a short, profound tweet, issued a few hours after Josina Anderson appeared on SportsCenter:
Dear ESPN, Everyone but you is over it.

In light of the backlash, ESPN issued this statement, clearly missing the point that their choice to report on Sam’s shower preferences is what has everyone so miffed.
[Via Yahoo!] “In response to recent questions about Sam fitting in with the team, multiple Rams brought up the shower topic and we relayed that information as part of our reporting.”
In other news, a few players on the Rams said “Fuck” in the locker room. (Point being, you don’t have to tell us everything you hear from players.)
As far as football is concerned, Michael Sam just made the Rams 75-man roster. No word on where he’ll be showering as the preseason concludes…
ESPN has since apologized for going “there,” as in “the showers.” Appreciate it.
[Via ESPN PR rep Josh Kruelwitz] On Tuesday’s Michael Sam report: “ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports.”
Great. Water under the bridge. Now hit the showers, you guys.
